screen sharing (Sierra) set up assistance

My parents have recently made the move to a MacBook pro. I am trying to assist them in setting a few things up. They are about 1,000 miles away (a few states away).

How do I go about using & setting up screen sharing/take over their screen to assist them?

Trying to explain to them over the phone has become a PAIN and I'd rather quit than to keep up my current process.

Is there an application that makes this process easy?

iMac, macOS Sierra (10.12.1)

The easiest way to initiate a screen sharing session is through Messages: https://help.apple.com/messages/mac/10.12/index.html?localePath=en.lproj#/icht11 883.

Prerequisites include establishing an Apple ID and having Messages configured and ready for use. If they need help with that, perhaps they should contact AppleCare. Their purchase includes 90 days of complimentary telephone or chat assistance.
