Why does Skype on my new macbook air say I'm offline. How can I fix this. I've tried uninstalling and re - installing but still having the same problem.. thanks

In the Skype app, use Skype's menu to go to File > Change Status.

You have to try a few times (4 for me) and then wait for the tick to move from offline to online. Really worked for me. Credits to @sberman once again.
