Hi

Apple cables are covered against defects in materials and workmanship under Apple's Limited Warranty.

If a cable fails under normal use, contact Apple Support (mail-in service may be available), make a Genius Bar reservation or visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider with a view to having it checked and, if agreed, replaced under warranty:

Note that the warranty does not cover accidental damage, nor does it cover damage caused by misuse or using the cable outside Apple's guidelines.

Apple's handling instructions for the Lightning to USB Cable, for example, include:

"Certain usage patterns can contribute to the fraying or breaking of cables. The Lightning to USB Cable, like any other metal wire or cable, is subject to becoming weak or brittle if repeatedly bent in the same spot. Aim for gentle curves instead of angles in the cable. Regularly inspect the cable and connector for any kinks, breaks, bends, or other damage. Should you find any such damage, discontinue use of the Lightning to USB Cable."

"When you unplug a cable from your product, a power source, or an AC adapter, hold on to the connector at the end of the cable."

If the rubber twists often (can happen depending on the way it's stored for example) it can cause the split. I'm not sure why they won't cover it unless the appearance of your issue looks like wear and tear versus anything else. As I stated, i had no problem having cord replaced under warranty and it was about 9 months old at that point. I haven't had a history of warranty repairs (not implying that you do) so I don't know if that was a reason they gave me the benefit of the doubt it replaced as a courtesy but my rubber was indeed split to the point that the wiring was exposed. The cord still worked but I was concerned about it being unsafe. I contacted Apple not sure if it was something that would be covered but it was. You can always contact them again or if you are visiting an Apple Store request to speak to a manager

I had no problem with Apple replacing my cord under warranty when it started doing that (only happened to one and I've had numerous iPhones throughout the years since the 4). I called them, described the issue, and one was shipped to me immediately. Have they already had to replace yours in the past and are refusing to do it again? I hear so many people say their cords fall apart all of the time but I honestly can't relate. Out of all of those iPhones and multiple iPods and 2 iPads I've only had that one fail...and I'm not the most gentle lol. I still have the cord from my first iPhone 4 (youngest son is using that phone to prove he can be responsible with a phone) and it still looks and works perfectly.

Thanks once again

Apple maintains that charger is not covered under warranty- the charger has not been damaged by bend at same spot or pulling out etc. - just the skin of the cable peels off at various spots

1 st I though its rat at home and wondered why they are after iphone chargers only - later I started observing with my friends - while travelling and yesterday found a Facebook community of 3k+ members with same opinion - what is painful is apple still maintains that it's not a manufacturing issue

Yes - my issue seems same as yours and I never take charger out for it to be kept in a twisting position - and I never had any warranty repair- probably apple service in India have a different view and I have done many followups - what baffles me is why they are not accepting it and giving a solution despite such feedbacks for an otherwise good phone - it would be a simple R&D for them - moment a better phone comes such instances doom the brand

it's not a manufacturing issue

A charger is not a cable.

Both the charger (USB power block) and cable are covered under warranty.

However, damage may not be covered under warranty.

Then it goes back to question why the inconsistency of the choice to replace under warranty or not. Just spoke to a friend to ask if she's ever had hers replaced under warranty due to the covering peeling off. She said they did it once on her last iPhone and she's actually waiting for a replacement to arrive right now for the one that came with her iPhone 7 that she got on release day. She's here in my area so she had to contact Apple via telephone since our closest Apple Store is about 120 miles away.

Look at the bigger picture - seems almost everyone has faced the issue of charger peeking - dispute is only on whether apple is replacing it or not and policies

Recollect that No other brand - blackberry / Samsung / Lenovo / google has this charger peel off issue - unheard and Apple is not addressing this or acknowledging this as a defect - leaving us to crib
