We're not actually sure why it's gone. Or if it's gone for everyone. But, no one here would know Apple's plans for the future. You can submit feedback here:
Best of luck.
There have been a couple of discussions about this very same issue recently and according to a couple of knowledgable, high level ASC members, the feature was removed from all phones except the larger screen iPhone 6 and iPhone 7.
However, I was in a discussion with another high level, knowledgeable ASC member and his iPhone 5s still shows the contact photos. My iPhone 5s does not show the contact photos.
I'm pretty much completely confused by the issue now. Originally, it seemed to be confined to Group Messages. This is the first thread I've seen that talks about individual messages. I know longer have any certainty about what's happening.
Do you think it will ever return?
I Am totally clueless on this. It seems to be working for some people, but I no longer have the feature on my iPhone. Look at the discussion that I posted above.

I'm not longer as sure as I was. And, I have no access to an SE to do any testing (stupid layoff!).
Does the iPhone SE display contact pictures in iMessage like the iPhone 6s and 7?
