Download Desktop and Documents back from iCloud Drove to my MAC!!

iCloud Drive:

Apple "Genius" put EVERYTHING into iCloud Drive without consulting me! I want everything (especially Desktop and Documents folders) restored back to my MAC!!! Per "Mac Help", if you uncheck Desktop and Folders within System Preferences, an alert pops up saying "If you continue, items will be removed from the Desktop and the Documents folder on this Mac and will remain available in iCloud Drive."

See the following from Add your Desktop and Documents files to iCloud Drive - Apple Support

Turn off Desktop and Documents

When you turn off Desktop and Documents, your files stay in iCloud Drive and a new folder is created on your Mac. You can move files from iCloud Drive to your Mac as you need them, or select all of your files and drag them to the place you want to keep them.

  1. From your Mac, go to Apple menu User uploaded file > System Preferences > iCloud.
  2. Next to iCloud Drive, click Options.
  3. Deselect Desktop & Documents Folders.
  4. Click Done.

Fox,

Thank you!!!! But 1 question........

I REALLLLLLLLY WANNNT my original "Documents" & "Desktop" folders back on my Mac. No way to bring those originals back to my Mac instead of creating new duplicates? I was told the folders with emblems are the "originals".... tis those that I want OUT of iCloud Drive and back home with me & Mac! 🙂 Understand what I mean??

It would be a new folder. I'm probably the wrong one to ask as I had to go look to even see what you mean about the emblems on the folders. I use the list view with small icons where they are barely visible.

The only other option I can think of that MIGHT work would be to restore the folders from a backup (e.g., Time Machine or other) -- but that is just a guess on my part.

You can come back to this anytime -- but usually you are more likely to get an answer by just posting a new question. There are a lot of people here with knowledge in a lot of different areas -- just because I guessed right once (and I usually avoid guessing) doesn't mean I'll be able to help in another area. Also different people are available different times and days so you may get faster results by posting a new question.

If, per chance, I decided to use iCloud Drive again........all I do is go back to System Preferences and "re-check" Desktop & Documents??

You can do that. But you can also use iCloud Drive without including Desktop & Documents. Just put a check mark in front of System Preferences > iCloud > iCloud Drive and leave the Desktop & Documents option off. You can then put selected items in the iCloud Drive folder (which you can add to the Finder Sidebar via Finder Preferences or you can also access if via the Finder Go menu). You also have the choice of whether or not to use the "Optimize Mac Storage" setting on the iCloud options preference window.
