Manage your Apple ID - Safe to Change ID?

Hi,

I've noticed that the options available on the Manage your Apple ID (appeid.apple.com/account/manage) have changed recently.

You can now click on Edit, and then Edit Email Address... for your Apple ID.

My Apple ID is currently an @gmail.com address, which I don't want. I want to change my Apple ID to an @me.com address that I already have.

If I click on Edit Email Address... and change it from an @gmail.com address to @me.com, will everything be OK? Is it safe to do? The last thing I want to do is accidentally mess up my Apple ID.

Thanks for your help.

Yeah, except...

If you go to appleid.apple.com, and under APPLE ID click on Edit Email Address..., you STILL can't change it to an Apple owned domain (@me.com or @icloud.com). So, I am STILL stuck with a Google email address, as my Apple ID, which is crazy. Like, everything I do with Apple, all my iTunes Store purchases, all my App purchases, essentially goes "via" Google, their competitor.

I just want my APPLE ID to be @icloud.com instead of @icloud.com. Is that too much to ask in 2017?
