iMessages aren't syncing between MacBook and iphone

I can send messages on both my MacBook (using macOS Sierra) and my iPhone 6 (iOS 10.2). The problem I'm running into is that I cannot see the messages I've sent from my MacBook on my iPhone and vice versa.

I've looked at my preferences and accounts on my MacBook and I only have the option to select my email (which is connected to my iMessage account) but I do not have the option to add my phone number - this is something that I've read as a solution on other questions.

I used to be able to see them both but for some reason it's changed and I cannot figure out how to fix it! Please help!

Does your phone number appear on your phone under settings/messages/send & receive? If it does is it selected under "start new coversations...."

If not, try turning off iMessages (green slide button) and power down, wait a few minutes to power on and turn iMessages on again - does your phone number appear, select as above if it does.

ps. If number is on phone but still not on mac do the same procedure on the computer.

Hi,

It should be:-

Enable the iPhone for Messages (registers the Number)

Enable the Apple ID on the Mac.

Then Add in Settings > Messages > Send and Receive the Apple ID.

As you do that the two are linked and the Mac will show a pop up that you should accept.

The iPhone number is added to the list on Alternatives for Receiving and the "Start Conversations From" drop down appears at the bottom.

Set the "Start From" ID on both devices. (they can be the same or they can be different).
