In Itunes library itself the books category does not show up, only music categories. Checking in preferences I do not see the option to add this. Does this mean that there is no way to do this?

There's so much going on in iTunes that can get confusing, quickly.
Open iTunes, and sync. With the cable still in, look at the list of devices and connections. It will look something like this:
Under Settings, on the upper right side, you may see the option to use check boxes, like this:
If the box is unchecked, no changes or updates will happen. Also, be aware that checking Selected options will let you change the setting for one sync; then, it the setting goes automatically to entire library.
Yes, you need to be connected to your computer, the same way you sync. Once that's done, you'll get a display showing Settings and On My Mac. Settings is where you do the changes.

At the top it says library I do not see anything saying settings. Also, in the past I could see the main sync page. Where is this?
You need a device connected to your computer, and select that device in iTunes. How are you syncing and to what are you syncing?
iTunes library does not show books, however books do get synced
