Installing Canon photo software

I am tring to install Canon's photo software that came with the Canon SLR I bought. I can't load the software on my 10.3.9 OSX Mac. When I click the Canon EOS Digital Installer icon, it says it's preparing to install the ImageBrowser (I guess that's the first program in its list) and comes back and says Not Authorized to Write to this folder. So I can't load any of the software.

Canon support says I have to disable security (not the most helpful help). I didn't know I could do that. Any ideas?

You probably don't need to install any software from Canon to use your camera with your computer unless you want to. When you plug the camera into the Mac, does it see it? Likely it will offer you some options on what to use to access the photos on the camera.
My personal preference is to use Image Capture and not iPhoto since I don't like programs controlling my photos. Instead I use Image Capture to download the photos to my hard drive and I use my own folder system to sort them.
But anyway, back to your question. Is the account you are using on your Mac the administator account? Do you have multiple accounts on the computer? If not, try restarting the computer and hold down the SHIFT key until you see the SAFE BOOT screen. After it boots up try installing. Safe Mode simply loads the operating system and not any of the auto loading applications that might be starting up with your computer.

Actually, I've always used an external card reader and store my photos "naked" in Finder windows. (I also don't like programs controlling my photos) and I don't like having to handle the camera with the computer (CF card is easier). Getting at the pictures isn't the problem.

I've used Nikon's View program for looking at pics and sorting them. It didn't interpret the horizontal/vertical bit properly, so portrait shots were showing up as fat landscape (stretch to fit!). I found an upgrade of Nikon's View on the web and that fixed the problem.

I guess I wanted to load the Canon software to see how it worked. I've never been into iPhoto as I like to control my pics folders and have the program access MY files, not create its own.

Anyhow, I still can't load the Canon software. I'm looking at iView MediaPro for better cataloging. Any thoughts?

You didn't answer Patrick's question: were you logged in to an administrator account?

What version of the Canon software do you have? I had no problem (while logged on with administrator privileges) installing from the "Canon Digital Camera Solution Disk" version 28.3 which includes (for the Mac) ImageBrowser 5.6, PhotoStitch 3.1, EOS Utility 1.0, as well as ArcSoft PhotoStudio 4.3. I then was able to download ImageBrowser 5.7.2.18 from Canon's web site. Not sure if I updated the others at the same time.
