Photos crashes when adding faces
iMac, macOS Sierra (10.12.2), 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
Must be my preference files?
Preferences files or login items that are only started in your user account.
Check first in the System Preferences > Users & Groups for you account, if you are starting any helper applications, that are not active in a new user account.
If there is nothing suspicious, delete the Photos preferences file.
Move the complete folder ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Photos to your desktop. Move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Restart the Mac and try again.
Have you tried to repair the library? if the library had been an iCloud Photo Library, repairing would be a lot of trouble, because it will start the upload to iCloud again. But for a local library it is worth a try. When photos crashes, it may leave the library in an inconsistent state, that may need repairing.

Repair your library
If you experience problems with photos in a library, Photos can try to repair it. If problems persist, you can also restore your library from a Time Machine backup.
Important: You should back up your photo library before repairing your library.
- If Photos is open, choose Photos > Quit Photos.
- Press Option-Command and double-click the Photos icon in the Applications folder (or click the Photos icon in the Dock). The Repair Library window opens.
- Click Repair to rebuild your photo library.
As a test, check, if the problem persists, when you create a new test library in a different user account.
See this support document on how to test in a different user account:
How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac - Apple Support
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204443
This test will tell us, if you are having a system wide problem, or if preferences files in your own user account are to blame.
And have you tested in another user account?
See: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac - Apple Support
Try to find out, if the problem is system wide or restricted to your user account.
Oops! Was working great then Photos crashed and on relaunch I'm only seeing 3 photos. I have restarted and I am connected to my main photo library. Interestingly when I go to people - all the names and numbers of photos are there under gray boxes. No photos.
I have the exact same problem. Have tried both suggestions here (rebuild & remove plist etc) and also restored from an older TM backup before the problem occurred.
Essentially Faces isn't working any more for me.
Great suggestion and have tried, and the other account i have on this Mac is fine.
However, I've already done the delete preferences and plist and reboot.
I'll try it once more and see what happens.
Will post back.
Half way there, and then all the way there, thanks !!
First, deleted the hidden files, then rebuilt the library, now i can add faces direct from a photo. But the "confirm additional faces" just returned with "no more faces" or similar wording.
But then i tried it again, without altering anything, and it worked ! Go figure !
Many thanks for your help

Have you checked the startup items in System Preferences > Users&Groups for your account? Is there anything listed, that is not started in a different account?
In addition to the Preferences files you trashed, you may want to empty caches that are related to Photos, if they exist in your account:
~/Library/Caches/Photos_Cache/
yep I already checked in startup items, nothing relevant but i have removed some old junk anyway (for example, a Palm Pilot app, havent used that for maybe 5+ years ! !!!) .
No cachefile as you mentioned exactly, there is a folder Photos_cache.noindex but its empty.
This problem started this morning after i had named a lot more faces, so it cant be a coincidence, suppose something got corrupted.
Many thanks for your help.
Thanks. I opened a new library under new user and no problems. Must be my preference files?
Worked! Thanks so much.
Great! You're welcome 🙂
Where is your Photos Library stored? On an external drive or in Pictures on your system drive?
Are you using iCloud Photo Library?
Pictures are on my system drive. I use iCloud photostream and photo sharing but not for my entire library.
