I want to be able to open and edit word documents in pages and have them remain as word docs. I do not want to convert to pages then back to word each time.

If you don't have Microsoft Office 365/Word in your iPad any Word documents you click open to edit is edited in Pages. When done, just export the edited version back to Word format. It gets to be less of an effort when you get used to it (if you ask me, I'd prefer doing this than paying Microsoft a subscription fee/license fee to use its Office 365 software).
You can open them and then export to Word format.
