Iphoto stuck on import from iPhone??

My iPhoto program has frozen while importing photos from my iPhone 6 last week. Even though the phone is disconnected the program still says that it is importing photos and will not close. The message that comes up is 'Photos are being imported to the photo library - please wait for upload to complete'. I cannot shut down the iPhoto app and therefore it won't let me shut down the computer. Any ideas how i can force iPhoto to stop upload and close the program? Thanks

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Have you tried to force quit the iPhoto.app? From the -menu:  > Force Quit, then select iPhoto and click Force Quit.

Are the photos you tried to import still one the iPhone? If you used "Delete after Import"and the photos are no longer on the iPhone, do not restart the computer or restart iPhoto, before you checked, if there is still an "Importing" folder in the iPhoto Library where you can recover the photos from. If there is such a folder, copy it out of the iPhoto Library, just in case.

Only then restart your Mac and see, if you now can launch iPhoto regularly.
