MBP 2016 - LG 5k monitor and windows bootcamp problem

When I boot Windows 10 via bootcamp, I have experienced very erratic behaviour when I connect the 27'' 5k LG monitor to my 15'' MBP 2016, as follows:

  • Windows will crash outright: and reboot
  • No picture at all will show up on the LG display: and an error message, "USB device not recognized" will appear on the MBP display
  • I will get a picture on the LG display, but with max resolution 1280p
  • Sometimes the problem will only affect one of the thunderbolt 3 ports on the mac, sometimes all of them: i.e. I will get a picture if I connect the LG monitor to one of the ports, but not if I connect it to any of the others
  • The display works flawlesssly during a windows session: with 4k resolution, as it should.

I know this is not a hardware or cable issue: since the monitor is working perfectly in MacOS. Windows is updated. Have tried a number of reboots. Reinstalling the AMD drivers in Windows has had no effect on the problem. That could indicate that Windows in itself is the root of the problem. It seems to handle this (new) type of connection poorly?

Has anyone else experienced anything similar, and is there a solution to this problem?

I think I've managed to resolve this issue: at least for now: I tried different graphics drivers from this place:

http://www.bootcampdrivers.com/

And upon installing these, everything seems to work as it should. I still get funny messages about "link error", but I get the display resolution of 2304x4096, and games work as they should.

Conclusion: seems to be a driver bug. Hopefully AMD will iron this out in the next driver update.

I have similar problems as you with my 15" MBP 2016 & LG 5k monitor. I don't have the Windows 10 crashing or no picture issues. I do have the issue with the LG coming up in 1280 x 768 when booting and not being able to use the display preferences to adjust resolution up further. Sometimes an error gets logged about a link failure in the Radeon tools. Shutting down (vs. restarting) one or more times seems to get me to 4k mode. Like you, the LG seems to work fine in OSX Sierra although I have had issues with the system locking up after I open/close the MBP display. The system is still running (I can ssh into it) but the display and keyboard/mouse are unresponsive. Like the other commenter, I downloaded and installed the latest AMD Radeon 455 drivers from bootcampdrivers.com and it seems to improve the stability but doesn't eliminate the resolution problems. Like you said once it's successfully in 4k mode everything seems to work fine. I'm hoping future AMD Radeon drivers or LG firmware upgrades will fix the problems.

Any updates on this? I'm running dual asus zen screens and i have to spend about an hour everymorning to get them to display correctly in bootcamp im about to just buy a pc. works fine in mac os. But im a day trader and i need pc software for when im trading. Everytime i think infixed it and its working correctly. I wake up the next morning to display link errors and cant get the monitors to display in the correct resolution.
