Thinking Outside the Box Concerning Features of Logic Pro

Hi,

Does anyone have any "unusual" features they would like to see added
to Logic Pro?

Here is at least one of mine. If it is unrealistic for some reason, please
let us know.

If you have new, "thinking outside" the box features you'd like to talk
about, please add them.

I'd like to see a new difinition of a musical instrument called the
"Apple Musical Instrument" which is not limited to 16 MIDI channels,
but can hold any multiple of 16 channels. Obviously, this new
musical instrument would only be applicable to Logic (and not to
that old, external synth of mine sitting across the room).

In this way, given the Garritan String Orchestra, I could assign each
musical instrument in the Apple Musical Instrument to 1 of 64 or so
audio instruments, covering, say, all the articulations of the First Violins.
Then I could control these different articulations using MIDI channel
1 through 64 (I prefer to define an articulation with a MIDI channel instead
of using a continuous controller type).

Of course, I would also like far more than 128 audio instruments, somewhere
in the range of 2,048 would be nice.

Thanks,
Sys6

Sure would be convenient not to have to be limited to 16 MIDI channels for so many things, that's for sure. And GUI's like GPO's don't help any by offering only 8 slots (man I wish those guys would develop their own GUI and get away from the horrid Kontakt player. But I digress). Of course, the idea of 16 MIDI channels is based on a now 20+ year-old, 7-bit protocol.

It could be argued that users already have the capability already to expand beyond the limitation of 16 channels by virtue of using multiple devices, but it IS far from convenient to do so. So I agree, such an advance would be most welcome.

I'd like to see a few things appear in a future version of Logic that would help with workflow. For example:

• a combined score editor, matrix editor, and event editor in one. It would be so much more convenient to edit this way instead of opening 3 different windows.

• a 3-D matrix editor where multiple regions and/or overlapping notes within a single region could be easily seen and edited.

• heirarchical folders (not an original idea, but I like it) -- where by clicking your typical "disclosure triangle" would open the folder tracks into the arrange window so that they appear as regular tracks along with the existing arrange tracks.

• a real-time key-to-channel assignment algorithm for voicing strings or other instruments. In the case of strings it would be fantastic to be able to play/improvise string parts and have the high notes automatically assigned to ch1 (preset to play a violin section), second highest notes to ch2 (2nd violins), ch 3 for violas, ch 4 for celli, ch 5 for basses. If you played six notes, the algorithm would look at where that note was played with respect to the others and assign it to the appropriate instrument as though that instrument were playing a double-stop. And, for unison lines, it would automatically output on, say, ch1, 2, and 3 when playing mid-high register string parts.

Anyway, those are off the top of my head. Cool thread, thanks for starting it.

Happy Holidays to all, but especially ISchwarz. Thanks for your help throughout the year, and your attention to detail in your answers. I don't know where you find the time, but you've helped me in a crisis, and you deserve good fortune in the new year for all the assistance you've doled out in 2006.
My list of desired features is too long to think about now. I'll post next week.

Mac Pro 3.0, G5 2.5, G5 2.0 Mac OS X (10.4.8) Logic 7.2.3

Hi Superscore, thanks for the kind words. Glad to be able to help. A year or so ago when I got my G5/LP7, it wouldn't run Logic without crashing within 30 seconds and if it weren't for the guys in this forum I'd be up the proverbial creek without a paddle. So I'm just giving back some. And re finding the time? I type fast LOL! Happy Holidays to you too!
