JVC KW-R920BTS no sound from map apps on iPhone 7 Plus

I got a JVC KW-R902BTS receiver for Christmas. My iPhone 7 Plus connects via Bluetooth. I can answer the phone or stream Spotify, Music, etc via Bluetooth or USB on the receiver. However I cannot hear turn-by-turn directions or alerts from Waze through my car speakers even when Waze is the active app on my iPhone. I have tried Google Maps and no alerts. Sound is "on" in both apps. I have also tried connecting via USB. Same thing. What can I do to play sound from map apps onto my car speakers?
