Why is the gold on my lightning cable turning black?

I Was bought an iPad Air 2 and a 2 metre lightning cable for Christmas 2016 and the gold little bits on my lightning cable having started turning black and no longer charging my iPhone 6 or my iPad. What is causing this? I do not use any products (cables, plugs) that aren't Apple and have had no power surges in my home. Could someone please give me advice

It sounds like corrosion of some type. Have you tried to wipe those contacts with a soft cloth?

Is that cable an official apple cable or third party? If it's an apple cable, then make an appointment at your local apple store and have them check it out. If it's third party then you may wish to check the return policy or simply replace it. If you do, I would suggest only what I consider reputable companies....Targus, Belkin, Kensington. Really cheap third party 'no name' items off Amazon are often of a very low quality.
