Has this update corrupted your iMac also?

Security update 2016-003 attached to this update corrupted my iMac. It would not restart after the update. went into a loop state or wait state. Had to recover the whole disk from Time Machine. it cost me 5 hours to do that.

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

No it did not (I'm typing this from my El Capitan iMac where I did all the updates yesterday).

Next time (hopefully there will not be a next time, but if there is a next time) try booting into Safe mode

If you want to have someone look at your configuration and provide suggestions on the 3rd party software you may have installed that could possibly interfere, please post the EtreCheck output

Just a small note: apparently in Sierra, one has to do hold the Shift key instead of the Option key to use Go->Library.

My Sierra still needs "Option", not Shift.

That is curious. Without noticing, I had been advising people to Option-click until a few days ago on another thread user dialabrain pointed out the shift (pun intended). I went to try and sure enough I now need the Shift key for this. I thought Sierra had brought this change. Intriguing!

Well

Finder -> Go -> Go to Folder -> ~/Library

should still work (although explaining the ~ tilda all the time is a pain ๐Ÿ™‚)

Here are screen shots from my Sierra 10.12.3 system (Late 2012 15" Macbook Pro w/Touch Bar)

Summary. Uninstalled Webfoot AV. Made no difference. Attempted security update again and it failed. Gets stuck after hours on black screen. Reboot takes me to sign to user screen where after login in, it just sits and spins the wait wheel icon forever.

So I restored again from time machine, but his time to a new external hard drive. Successfully booted up and started some back ups. Run my EtreCheck report below and performance is 3:44 vs 22:03, so i suspect the internal hard disk is starting to fail. What causes it to fail in this security update is a mystery. The only other unusual software I have installed is Parallels VM for mac so i can run some Windows only apps. Any comments??

You might look in

Finder -> Go -> Go to folder -> ~/Library/LaunchAgents

to find these .plists and remove them if you do not expect to restore the executables that are missing.

They do not hurt anything as they are, it is just clutter at this point in time.

Yes, a 5 year old disk can start to fail. And making a wild guess, but it is possible that when you did the last update, it used some storage in a "Bad Neighborhood", such that some important bit of software was placed over a bad spot on the disk, causing the disk to do a lot of retires before it can successfully read the data. This is a far fetched theory, but not impossible.

But failing disks will start to do a lot of retries, with each retry having to wait for 1 full rotation of the disk. Each rotation is about 1/100'th of a second. The disk controller can do hundreds of retries before giving up, so you could wait a large fraction of a second to several seconds for each read if the disk has deteriorated enough.

When it gets bad enough the disk will give up and report an error. If AND ONLY IF, the error is still sitting in the system logs (which get rotated out every 7 days), EtreCheck will report the error when giving you the disk information. But if the last reported error was more than 7 days ago, EtreCheck will not see it.

But EtreCheck does collect the S.M.A.R.T. data for the disk, if you want to look at it. See the [Show SMART report] button in your EtreCheck output:

WDC WD1001FALS-403AA0 disk0 : (1 TB) (Rotational)

[Show SMART report]

Click on it.

I will warn you that the S.M.A.R.T. report is not obvious and is specific to each disk manufacturer. But it will show retry information, which there is always some. It is a question of whether it is over the top.

You can post the S.M.A.R.T. info here if you want, but I'm NOT an expert, but more eyes on it the more likely someone might see something (or just claim to see something ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ).

Can you elaborate on that? Is something wrong with WebRoot? The last time i had this security update failure issue, I had bit defender for mac installed. So uninstalled it. Actually it pretty much was uninstalled by the corruption of the hard drive. I haven't noticed that performance is poor except when booting up after a failed security update. WebRoot is just an app like most others. If you don't want it, you just delete the app. All the virus dat files are in the cloud. in that respect it seems less intrusive than most anti virus products.

I can't find the com.acronis.plist file anywhere. The report says it fails to launch. I don't use Acronis, I deleted the free trial. If I could find it I would delete it. Searching on finder yielded nothing.

There are 3 Libraries

/System/Library

/Library

~/Library <<-- This one is in your home folder. The ~ (tilda) is a Unix file system shortcut that stands for your home directory.

You can also get to your ~/Library by holding the "Option" key and clicking on Finder -> Go -> Library. This folder is normally hidden from the Finder, which is why you need the "Option" key when using the "Go" menu to display it. Too many uses messed around in their home Library, and then wondered why their Mac stopped working, or they lost all their mail, etc..., so Apple starting hiding it to cut down on support calls.

Intriguing!

I have just figured it out why some of us need SHIFT and some need OPTION.

It is a bit weird, but here it is:

It is now possible to make the Library folder visible again, without any trickery: if you open your home folder in the Finder, and do Command-J (View->Show View Options), there is now a checkbox for "Library".

The moment you check this, not only the Library folder becomes visible, but (surprisingly) the shortcuts change, and (Option) Go becomes (Shift) Go. I had this checked on both my macs. Unchecking returns the option-key behavior, rechecking makes it again use the Shift key.

NOTE: If you do decide to replace this iMac's disk, an SSD will make that iMac sing.

Or if you do not use the DVD, put the SSD in the DVD drive bay, and just replace the existing 1TB rotation disk with a new disk so you have the OS and apps on the SSD, and then put bulk libraries on the rotational disk (Music, Pictures, Videos, etc...)

MacSales.com Data Doubler DVD to SSD conversion kits

I used one of these on my Late 2009 27" iMac and it is still a viable system I use everyday at work.

Has this update corrupted your iMac also?
