How to fix keychain from asking for access to login multiple times?

Recently after updating (Sierra 10.12.3 on newish MacBook Air) whenever I wake from sleep or restart I am bombarded with several messages stating that * needs my password to access login on my keychain. They often pop up on top of each other sometimes even as I am typing which is insanely annoying. I have pored through multiple support topics and tried everything I can find to no success.

I did the 'click the lock open and closed' in Keychain then restart. I reset the password. I reset the keychain creating a new keychain which was a huge pain in the butt. There were several passwords in there that I had forgotten and had to recover. None of that worked. I even deleted the keychain folder in user library which was listed as a last resort.

Nope.

Those !@^%$#! little windows still pop up. Any help would be appreciated.

If you are frequently asked to unlock your keychain, your user password may be out of sync with the keychain login password. When a new user is created, the user password and the keychain login password are the same. When you log in to your computer, Keychain Access automatically unlocks the login keychain and there is no need for you to unlock your keychain.

Under some circumstances, if, for example, the user password is changed, it can get out of sync with the keychain login password.

As per the article : Keychain Access: If you’re asked frequently to unlock your keychain

Further additional steps can be applied :

Here's how you set the Lock screen to show on the desktop:

  1. Open Keychain Access from the Utilities folder in your Applications folder.
  2. Choose Preferences from the Keychain Access menu, then click the General tab.
  3. Select "Show keychain status in menu bar." A lock icon appears in the menu bar.
  4. To lock your screen manually, click the padlock icon and choose Lock Screen.

Have you transferred all passwords before deleting the old keychains folder into a freshly formed new empty keychain folder in the user library ( ~/Library ) and if you have deleted the entire old keychain folder into the trash & restarted the machine & emptied the trash .

in this scenario you have to contact senior consultants in the Apple Support , they will send a link & you have to attach disk image & send them through mail in the time period of 7 days , after 7 days the link will be expired .

The disk image will be send to the Apple engineering team and you have to leave your call back number to the advisor , after 4 to 5 days they will contact you and sort out the issue .

You will notice that removing the keychain folder itself will disturb the plists of preferences folder in user library ( The plists will not be in alphabetical order , all plists will be randomly placed ) .

Or if you have a good network speed install the operating system once again .

Note : I have faced the same issue once & deleted the entire keychain folder , restarted the machine & emptied the trash so it was very difficult for me too to bring back the new keychain folder in a normal condition , as keychain folder is part of the operating system .

Allow me to clarify. I did not delete the entire keychain folder in my user library. I deleted the folder [with randomly-generated name] inside the keychain folder as was described in another help topic. I did not delete the trash, so it is still in there. Keychain immediately generated a new folder with a different name. Apart from that, nothing has changed. I am still asked 3 or 4 times for my password so this or that can access keychain every time the computer wakes from sleep.

Have you gone to user library ~/Library in the folder keychains > right clicked on the first folder alfa numeric & move to trash , & you have not emptied it . You must restart the computer & empty the trash that is compulsory , so that a new fresh alfa numeric folder is created .

A very easy method is as follows :

If keychain is prompting to enter password multiple times , & pop - up is not going away when safari is opened .

In user library click on go to go folder & type ~/Library then find a folder > keychains > remove first folder ( alfa numeric folder ) to trash . Restart & empty the trash , go to internet accounts & once again configure web mail account , I cloud mail account by entering their passwords .

Open air port utility via spotlight > enter your base station password .

The alfa numeric folder is removed because keychain is corrupted and whenever you open the web browser ( may be safari ) , the pop - up prompts for passwords , & even if you enter , another pop - up window appears & it is not removed .

I'm having the same problem!!!! Grrrr.

I've just spent a half-hour on the phone with Apple about the problem - no solution!

If I leave the Keychain Access unlocked the messages stop appearing (although I've always kept the keychain access locked). I'm experiencing it with Safari and something else (but can't find what at the moment). Open Safari with the Keychain Access locked and I'm asked for the password - at the same time entering the password unlocks the keychain access! Once Safari is open and I relock the keychain access, it still seems to be accessing the passwords. So long as I don't close Safari down I seem to continue to have access.

I've always kept my keychain access locked as the default. This didn't start happening to me until earlier this afternoon. I realize I upgraded to Sierra 10.12.3 sometime in the past couple of weeks - perhaps I haven't closed down Safari in that time. Something else - when I get the pop-up in Safari - if I hit "cancel" two/three times the password window disappears.

Just now I got another pop-up "accountsd wants to use the "login" keychain" - my keychain is currently locked. I can only make that pop-up disappear by entering my password and the keychain access is then unlocked! Hitting "cancel" a dozen times or more does nothing!

So for now, I guess I leave keychain access unlocked!

I think this is a glitch in 10.12.3.

Eric, the post by Kappy deals with the older version of Keychain with the ability to perform first aid. What exactly do you suggest? I have not created a new user. My passwords were not out of sync as they had not been changed. Based on another post, I did change the password to make double certain. I reset the default keychain through preferences, so that should cover the rest of Kappy's suggestions as it created a new default 'login' keychain.

I am still asked for a password every time I wake the computer from sleep (which requires a password due to my security settings) or restart.
