safari freezes when quitting

Hi,

three days ago I updated my OS from El Capitan to Sierra. It was working perfectly since today, I installed some extensions and applications and since then my safari always freezes when I try to quit it. I tried everything I found on the internet, switching off extensions, disabled plug-ins, deleted catches.... everything. But my safari always freezes when I want to quit it, otherwise it works OK.

Do u have any tips for me? (when I switch to the guest user, this problem is not occurring)

thanks

Hi,

See if deleting the Safari cache.db (database) helps.

Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder

Type or copy paste the following

~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db

Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.

Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

If that doesn't help, a Safe Mode boot (safely) deletes system caches that can help after upgrading to a newer OS X.

To start up in safe mode:

  1. Start or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key. The white Apple logo appears on your display. If you don't see the Apple logo, learn what to do.
  2. Release the shift key when you see the login window. If your startup disk is encrypted with FileVault, you might be asked to log in twice: once to unlock the startup disk, and again to log in to the Finder.

To leave safe mode, restart your Mac without pressing any keys during startup.

Then try Safari.

Thanks for your answer in the first place. I have tried to delete "cache.db" but I have no access into that folder:User uploaded file

but I noticed another interesting thing, now safari is using enormous RAM, I can not find out why. Once it was even 32 GB....is that even possible? I had like one Tab opened and still.

It seems like reboot is needed. I will try to go that way

Jan 26, 2017 12:02 PM in response to praotec

Safari/Preferences/Advanced - enable the Develop menu, then go there and Empty Caches. Quit/reopen Safari and test. Then try Safari/History/Show History and delete all history items. Quit/reopen Safari and test. You can also try try Safari/Clear History…. The down side is it clears all cookies. Doing this may cause some sites to no longer recognize your computer as one that has visited the web site.

Go to Safari Preferences/Extensions and turn all extensions off. Test. If okay, turn the extensions on one by one until you figure out what extension is causing the problem.

You have adware installed. Run the report again and where you see the red Adware, click Remove. Once complete, run the report again and post a copy into a new reply.

Or download this program which was written by Thomas Reed, a long time poster. The program will do the work for you which makes it easy.

On the iMac, try the steps I suggested before. Safari is crashing.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db and move it to the trash.

Go to Safari Preferences/Extensions and turn all extensions off. Test. If okay, turn the extensions on one by one until you figure out what extension is causing the problem.
