We're heading on vacation and I don't want to be checking work emails all day. Is there a way to hide a work email account in the iPhone mail app without permanently deleting it? There used to be a way to hide the account in prior ios, but it doesn't seem to be available anymore. Same question for iPad.

Try these steps. Open Mail > Go to your Mailboxes > Edit > Uncheck the Email Address > Done
Then go to Settings > Notifications > Mail > select your work email > disable Badge App Icon.
This will hide any badge icons and emails temporarily. And disable any alert style you have. Your work emails will still show in All Mailboxes. There isn't a way to temporarily hide the email account.

I Think if you go to Settings>Mail>Your email account>Off, that will achieve what you want to do.
