Print queue won't clear

I recently upgraded my Early 2009 Mac Pro to 10.10.5, and had to download printing software from Apple for my HP OfficeJet 7000, since the printer's original software wouldn't work anymore.

I can print, check ink levels, and run the HP Utility just like before. But one thing has changed: After I print a job, and it has emerged from the printer, the print queue window still shows the job with the status of "Printing page 1, 100% complete." But this status never goes away--and I can't get another job printed--unless I click the little gray "x" to clear the now-completed and out-of-the-printer job.

I have deleted and re-added the printer in system prefs/printers & scanners. Still, manual clearing of the print queue is required. Why?

I reset the printing system per the instructions, and reconfigured the printer. However, the same problem exists as before: The job prints, the print queue won't clear and it gives the same message: "Printing page 1, 100% complete." As a bonus problem, I can hit the gray "x" and clear the last job, but the next job will just sit in the print queue indefinitely, and never comes out.
