thinking of buying a 16gb iPad. What I am wondering is how many songs it will hold. Last look at my library there were almost 700. I also read a lot. Thinking of this because I can't get iTunes to work on my laptop for some reason.

On average a song is 4mb in size depending on the bitrate and the length of the song. There's no definite answer we can give you because each song size is different and it depends on what you put on your phone.
However by using simple math assuming you would leave 5gb free for what ever you'd like which leaves 10 gb left over. So take 10,000mb/4mb = 2500 songs

At a very rough rule of thumb a three-minute purchased stereo song will occupy about 6.5MB. Divide that into 16GB and you get 2,460 songs. Obviously if you are given to longer songs there will be fewer, as there will be if you've been ripping from your CDs at a higher bitrate. A lot more than 700, anyway.
It depends on the length and bitrate of those songs, and how much other data is on the iPad. Compare the amount of free space on it with that used by the library.
