imovie for early 2015 macbook pro

I'm hoping to install iMovie on my early 2015 macbook pro, macOS Sierra 10.12.2. I heard that the application is available for free for certain macbooks--any further information about that?

Alternatively, I have a time machine back up on an external hard drive of my last computer, a 2012 macbook pro, which did have iMovie. Is there a way I can pull just the iMovie application out of this back up and install it on my new computer?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS Sierra (10.12.2)

iMovie is bundled free with all new Macs and becomes associated with the Apple ID of the first owner. Anyone buying a Mac second hand has to buy iMovie unless they already have it associated with the Apple ID from another Mac. If you log in to the App Store with the Apple ID you used in your old Macbook Pro when it was new or when you bought iMovie you should be able to download it for free on your early 2015 machine..
