iCloud constant password request/can't sign out/Cant sign in mail

I've had my iPhone 6 for nearly 2 years and this problem has occurred recently, it is updated to iOS 10.2.1. My phone is constantly asking for the password of my Apple ID which it accepts, but asks for again a few seconds after. I've restored my phone and put my last back up on again but the problem is still there, I've also changed the password and logged out of iMessage, FaceTime and the App store which all are fine logging in again. I also can't log out of the iCloud as I press 'sign out' then 'delete account' but this results in a message box saying 'Couldn't delete account This account may be syncing data please try again' which it isn't as it is not plugged into iTunes, but if I try again, a grey 'signing out...' box appears and the screen goes back to the settings menu, however the log in loop starts again.

I'm not sure if this is linked to this issue but my mail app has also had problems during the time the iCloud password problem, all the mail accounts that were signed in have disappeared and when I go in the mail app, there is a welcome screen with different email servers, if I try and sign in the message box says there is an identical account signed in but in settings there are no accounts signed in.

Oh holy cow, this led me to THE solution to my problem! I'm going to post this as it's own thread, but thought I'd share right here since lidton led me to the solution. Thank you!

My problem: I couldn't backup either my iPhone 7 OR my iPad Air 2. I would go to the backup settings, hit Backup Now and it would fail with the error, "icloud backup failed, there was a problem enabling icloud backup". If I disabled backup and then tried to re-enable it, it would fail to re-enable at all. Very frustrating! (I was also getting repeat login messages like those described in this thread, but only from time-to-time.)

Both were latest iOS, lots of free space on iCloud, good network connection, etc. Tried all the usual stuff...logged out and back into iCloud, reset network settings, reset device, restored from backup (DFU), you name it. Spent 79 minutes 16 seconds on chat with support (I'm going to post my frustration about that, too -- Apple needs to beef up their support capabilities)...all to no avail.

Then I found this post. Thought, hmm, that might be the problem. So I tried what lidton describes here AND...it failed again! Ha ha! But something lidton wrote got me thinking...you have to accept the iCloud Ts & Cs again. I never got prompted for that because every time I signed into iCloud (e.g., after following lidton's instructions), I got a 2-factor prompt and had to enter the code that appeared on my other device (e.g., iPad if signing in on my iPhone, or vise versa). I never saw an iCloud legalese prompt.

So, I disabled two-factor authentication and signed out and back in on my iPad (which I had restored using the instructions from lidton). It WORKED! Backup was enabled, it backed up without ANY errors. I'm good. Elated, actually!

So, if you have 2-factor turned on and are having problems with iCloud, especially where it won't backup, just turn it off (Two-factor authentication for Apple ID - Apple Support), relogin to iCloud, etc., and it just might fix your problem. You can re-enable two-factor again later (which is what I'll be doing in a moment).

Hope this helps some of you!

Had a chat to phone support - I mentioned I'd tried reset settings, turning off and on, changing the email address, trying "I forgot password", erase data and settings etc.

The phone support guy suggested I try "restore" from iTunes instead of "erase all data" - tried that twice. If I use "start as a new phone" it works to log in to iCloud (after you enter password, it says "it may take a few minutes to update your apple id", then "updating iCloud settings" with no crash) but I don't have any apps, text messages, photos, mail etc.

I then did "restore" again and had the same issue with it not being able to accept the password (a different endless loop)

i.e.

Get to "Enter the Apple ID password" ... two options: "forgot password?" (went through that process again but doesn't help) ... or "skip this step"

10 enter password - screen blinks black momentarily (seems like a crash), back to Hello in various languages, 'press home to open', enter passcode, back to 'enter to apple id password' ... after enter password ... 'updating icloud settings' (with spinner) and repeat (goto 10!)

Well, Apple does know about this now as I gave them this thread ID. On hold to them again now (probably for some time)

I suggested that whoever let this happen at Apple should be shot, but I suppose in order of severity it's not as bad as an iOS update that bricks the phone.

I also mused that this might only get fixed when 10.2.2 comes out.

Had a chat to three Apple support people today. Probably two hours all up. Last one will call me back tomorrow.

Second one suggested the put iOS in recovery mode and restore, but of course has the same problem after "Restore Backup".

I said I didn't want to lose text messages/iMessages back to 2008.

I said if possible solution involves data loss I'd rather just wait until the next iOS update (hopefully wouldn't be long).

Chatted to a Apple specialist. Other error messages I see are "An error occurred validating your storage server credentials. Please try again later." under the iCloud menu and a quickly visible "Removing iCloud data" when trying to sign out (error message changed in 10.3, but has the same effect). This are fairly unique search phrases that might take people to this page.

The specialist said he could escalate it but he would guarantee the first thing engineering would say would be wipe the phone and start again. So he said there are third party apps for exporting the messages (back to August 2008) and the rest can be restored from the backup - I presume photos, Viber/imo/whatsapp/telegram messages, contacts, address book, notes etc. Messages are files in the backup somewhere anyway.

So it IS a "solution", it's just not "solved - resolved to customer satisfaction." It's a more drastic version of the IT Crowd "have you tried turning it off and on again" - "have you tried wiping it and then turning it off and on again" and indeed that does "work", it's just very time consuming. Four phone calls and five different Apple support people and probably hours on the phone and there's not really an answer. He did say feedback can be made and would be acted on if enough people had the same issue ...

Any further details on this issue, anyone? It's crippled my phone. 😠

Strange that this happens right when they push the latest version of the iCloud code to support iOS 10.3, isn't it? Somebody screwed up over there and, in true Apple fashion, no one will own up to it and devise a fix. Totally absurd.

How do we collectively ensure that this issue gets some action from Engineering?

I got a very similar problem on my ipad air after upgrading to 10.3.2, can't sign out icloud, constant prompt for AppleID password, all settings related to iCloud are disabled, and also keep prompt to view new icloud terms and conditions. I suspect this is due to I skipped the cloud login during the upgrade, therefore didn't accept the new icloud terms, which somehow got the icloud account broke.

After 2 days of trying and googling, I got it working with following steps:

1. Turn on recovery mode, choose restore and update as a new ipad. (Do not restore backup)

2. Setup the new ipad, skip the iCould login step.

3. After the initial setup, go to setting and login into iCloud use my appleID. This time, it logged in fine. The icloud setting are enabled.

4. Go to Setting -> iCloud -> Turn off Find my iphone. Then, use iTune to restore a previous backup.

After all these, I got my data back and iCould setting is back to normal. During one of those steps (can't remember which one), it asked me to accept iCould terms and conditions, I guess that's the key to solve my problem. Anyway, hope this could help someone with similar issues.
