Why is "Do Not Disturb" not working for group messages?

With the new addition of DND (Do Not Disturb) for individual messages, I decided to use it for a group message with several friends. I like to turn this off during the workday so that I do not receive notifications from 8 people conversing on one group message. I clicked the "i" in the top right corner of the conversation, and activated the DND feature. However, I still receive notifications from the group message. None of the contacts in the group message are in my favorites, and DND is turned on.

Why am I still receiving notifications on the lock screen for this group message? I receive notifications both when the phone is locked and when I'm using another app! What's the point of the DND feature if I can't mute a group chat from blowing up my phone during the workday?

Hi DPU420!

I see that you're receiving notifications for a group message, despite the fact that you have Do Not Disturb turned on. I understand it's important to have your notifications working correctly, and I'm happy to help. I would advise to try deleting the group message thread, then starting a new message. This is recommended troubleshooting for issues with group messages.

If you have issues with a group message

You might reply to a group conversation and receive your own message. Or you might get a new phone number and see your old one listed as a recipient in an existing group conversation. If you have issues with a group message, you might need to delete the conversation and start a new one. Follow these steps:

  1. Open Messages and find the conversation you want to delete.
  2. Swipe left over the conversation, then tap Delete.

After you delete the group conversation, start a new one:

  1. Open Messages and tap User uploaded file.
  2. Enter the phone numbers or email addresses of your contacts.
  3. Write a new message, then tap Send.

When you delete a conversation, you can't recover it. If you want to save parts of a conversation, take a screenshot. To save an attachment in a conversation, touch and hold the attachment, tap More, then tap Save.

If you can‘t send or receive messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

I'm having the exact same problem. I'm sorry but if my goal is to stop (LITERALLY) five to ten group messages an hour during business hours why would I get involved in the message thread again? This is from a job I've left and I don't necessarily want to delete these folks as contacts but I want off the dang group message.

Please explain this solution a little more in depth maybe? Thank you.

@brenden dv: The support article from which you quoted is about the opposite problem - not being able to send or receive messages. Nonetheless, I tried deleting the conversation and having someone on the group test by sending a message to the group. I received the notification, and all the replies to the notification. Like the OP mentioned, Do Not Disturb is on for the conversation. All users are using the Messages app. I'm receiving notifications on all my devices - all of which show that Do Not Disturb is on for the group.

Other troubleshooting details:

- This feature used to work for me - I noticed it not working a couple of weeks ago.

- I've tried turning Do Not Disturb off and back on. No effect - I still receive the notifications.

Any other ideas? 🙂

Ok, I may have a solution that works, and yes it's basically "turn it off and on". Here's what I did, but I suspect you can just do this on one device:

- Turned Do Not Disturb off for the conversation on my iPad, iPhone, and 2 of three Macs

- Waited a few minutes

- Turned Do Not Disturb back on on one of the Macs. This time I noticed a little grey moon icon appeared on the left side of the conversation's row in the list of conversations on the left.

- Turned Do Not Disturb back on for the conversation on each device, checking for that little moon icon.

I then had someone send a test message, and I didn't receive a notification.

Notes:

- I had previously tried quickly turning Do Not Disturb off and on on a single device, and that didn't fix the issue. I suggest waiting long enough for the switch to sync to wherever it needs to sync to (e.g. two minutes).

- I found the conversation had Do Not Disturb off on one of my Macs (which happens to be running MacOS X Server, which may or may not be a contributing factor). It was that Mac on which I first noticed the moon icon appear when I turned Do Not Disturb on.
