My new 2016 iMac fusion drive is so much slower than my 2012 fusion drive.What the heck is going on?

Sandra,There is no such thing as a late 2016 iMac. If you would like, post and EtreCheck report and we can look for obvious issues. I believe the 2015 iMacs used a smaller SSD in the 1TB Fusion drives than the previous models, this may account for a difference in performance. However if you post the EtreCheck report we can then look and see if there are obvious problems with your iMac.

Also, if your iMac is the smaller, 21 inch screen model, the hard drives/fusion drives in these newer slimline iMacs are slower, laptop standard 5400 RPM hard drives as opposed to earlier iMacs that used the desktop standard 7200 RPM drives.That is a 33% drop in system read/write performance.

Try uninstalling/removing Avast and CleanMyMac.You did everything else right with this iMac, as far as specs, but you went with the fusion drive, instead.But I think your 21 inch screen iMac will still be slow, though.The fusion drives in the 21 inch screen iMacs only have a 24 GB SSD paired to a 5400 RPM hard drive, instaed of the normal/standard desktop 7200 RPM hard drives.So, once most of the SSD is filled with applications, the data storage of the actual data will be stored on the slower mechnical portion of the hard drive which reads/writes data at 33% slower speeds.If this still an issues after uninstalling Avast, the quickest solution tlo greatly improve the speed and performance of your 2015,  21 inch screen iMac, you are going to have to spend some significant more cash for this to happen.Purchase an externally enclosed USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt connected SSD.Format the SSD and then purchase data cloning software, like Bombich Software&#x27;s CarbonCopyCloner or Shirt Pocket&#x27;s SuperDuper to make a bootable clone of your current system to the SSD and boot and run your iMac, exclusively from the externally connected and enclosed SSD.Your iMac will run A WHOLE LOT FASTER from an externally connected and enclosed SSD!You can either opt to use your internal iMac&#x27;s Fusion SSD/hard drive to just store data OR purchase, yet, another external USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt connected 7200 RPM mechanically spinning hard drive to use as your primary data storage and data backup.If you are from the U.S., here is a good Mac/Apple source for external SSDs  and standard 7200 RPM hard drives here.https://www.macsales.com/You can call them to speak with a sales/technical rep or contact by emailGood Luck!

I will test after uninstalling the two software. I saw that I only had 24 GB SSD which was so disappointing when I discovered it.  I thought ordering a fusion drive would have at least given me 200+ GB  SSD.  Wrong.I will look into the external SSD drive - thanks so much.Sandy

FYI for the future.Antivirus software is NOT needed if the Mac you are running is only running OS X. Antivirus apps interfere with normal performance and operation of a Mac because they program too many controls (program extensions) into the main OS X system software impacting/impeding general performance of a Mac.Here are some of my tidbits of advice on how to avoid viruses in the future, if you encounter a virus, again.Some anti-virus solutions can slow down your Mac, but to be honest, the best anit-virus app is you, the user and your brain.Don&#x27;t visit questionable websites or website you are unsure about.Don&#x27;t use Torrents or engage in "Torrenting"Don&#x27;t install pirated software or software downloaded from a questionable or unknown websites or untrutsted sources.Java is still a vulnerability concern, if you do not need it, don&#x27;t use it.Use a browser filter and pop-up blockerDon&#x27;t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize.Install security updates when they become availableEducate yourself as to what threats are common and active.In effect, use your own brain as the antivirus filter.Follow that advise and in MOST cases, you will be fine and won&#x27;t risk your Mac to potential Trojans, malware or viruses.If you feel you need some baseline virus protection that is minimally invasive on the Mac OS X system, think about purchasing, downloading and installingClamXAVhttp://www.clamxav.com/DO NOT USE ANY SO CALLED APPS CLAIMING TO "CLEAN", "OPTIMIZE" OR "SPEED UP" YOUR MAC!!!! They really aren&#x27;t.There are manual methods to clear off unnecessary data off of your Mac that are safer and you have complete control over your Mac and not just leave a piece of auto cleaning software in charge of clearing off data off of your Mac. Their potential of causing OS X issues outweighs the implied good and benefits these types of hard drive or memory "cleaning" apps are written to do.These types of system &#x27;cleaning" apps are very poorly written and are really a scam to rob newbieand novice Mac users of their hard earned cash for a poorly written maintenance program that will do much more harm to a perfectly normal running OS X system than the good that the app developers purport these types of apps will do.Plus, the software companies that write these apps make it hard to easily uninstall these apps if something DOES go wrong and these apps work in a way where you have no recovery or revert function to return your Mac back to its former, working state in the event something does go wrong.It is best to never, EVER download and install these types of apps.The risk to your system and important data is too great a risk!Good Luck!

Earlier iMac models USED TO have fusion drives options with a 128 GB or 256 GBs SSD coupled to 7200 RPM hard drives.I think this all changed in 2015.While the 27 inch screen iMacs still come with 7200 RPM hard drives, there are no specs that state what size the Fusion drive&#x27;s SSD is paired to 1, 2 or 3 GBs 7200 RPM hard drives In those 27 inch screen iMac models.I am assuming that the 27 inch screen models have still retained the Fusion Drive with an 128 or 256 SSD still paired to the 7200 RPM hard drives.I just don&#x27;t know for sure, at this point.That is why my next iMac will be another ] used, 2011 top of line 27 inch screen iMac instead of a brand new iMac.
