I want to accurately record Nordic Ski activity. Both skate/racing and backcountry routes

I want to accurately record Nordic Ski workouts - both on a groomed track (skate skiing) and in the backcountry.

Outdoor running is the closest category. Should I just use that, then change the title when I save the workout in History?

Hi

When recording workouts via the Workout app, choose the activity type that most closely matches your workout. This enables your watch to use the most appropriate sensors and data sources when estimating results, including using tailored calorie calculations for certain activities.

To record workouts that are neither included within nor sufficiently similar to those in the main list, choose "Other" as the activity type.

This credits one minute of Exercise for each full minute of the workout and Active Calories (Move goal) at a rate equivalent to a brisk walk or based on data from the heart rate sensor, whichever is higher. Note that neither distance nor a route map are recorded under this workout type.

When ending an Other workout, tap the option to "Name Workout" to label the workout from a range of activity types, including Cross-Country Skiing.

It is not possible to change the activity type / label for workouts that are recorded under any of the main activity types (Outdoor Run, etc).

If you would prefer to track your route, then you may find that the following third-party app, for example, meets your needs.

The app supports standalone use of Apple Watch Series 2 and Series 3 models (which have built-in GPS) and use of other models in conjunction with the paired iPhone:

Trails · Outdoor GPS Logbook on the App Store

  • "Apple Watch models with GPS also support standalone recordings without a connected phone."
  • "Record all your outdoor activities be it hiking, jogging, cycling, canoeing or skiing down the Alps."
  • "The watch-recorded tracks will sync to your phone once both devices are connected again."

To browse and search for other third-party apps with the results pre-filtered to include only those iPhone apps that also include an app for Apple Watch, use the Watch app on your iPhone. Apps can be searched by keyword or app name via the Search tab.

Robert,

I’m finding Apples response to our problem, a year later, to be really, really poor. It would be SO INCREDIBLY SIMPLE, and sensible, to simply allow us (via a simple change) to select cross country skiing (skate and/or classic) and have the Apple watch GPS record our distance.

The idea that a year later, Apple has stubbornly refused to allow the many hundreds of thousands of cross country skiers to use their Apple watch to record our XC skiing workouts (distance skied) is shameful and embarrassing for Apple. My new Garmin watch works PERFECTLY for XC skiing, records distance without complaint, and my new Apple Watch 3 is on Craig’s list cheap.

Also, the idea that “other” activities are not “capable” of using GPS distance option is astonishingly ridiculous. It’s like telling a customer at the grocery store that they have to pay while standing on their head and humming a tune...because that’s just the way it is and sorry, we can’t change that...

Well played Apple! Well played.

I agree. I have to use my runkeeper to track distance and pace as I choose Cross Country Skiing on my Series 2 as my activity and it only shows the time of workout. Didn't even register my HR (data unavailable) so I have to go into another app (Cardiogram) to see my max HR and the HR of my entire workout - so 3 apps for my workout when my watch should do it it all. I find it so annoying as it is all GPS driven so why for Cross Country Skiing or "Snow Sports (I snowshoe) will it not show the route? I always have to use 2 apps so I can see my route with Runkeeper. Disappointed that Apple can keep up with technology. My crappy Fitbit was better at tracking stats. If I forgot to turn off a workout, I could go into the app and adjust the time of the workout.

Same here.. I use the Apple Watch to track the Nordic Ski activity and then I use Runtastic to all the others.. but I don't save the result in Health App to bnot double them! And even if you use the Runtastic app..it can't save all the correct things of the workout.

Hope Apple will do something quickly because as you all said.. they only have to enable some registering feautures.
