Number of items in a mail folder

I'm using the latest version of Mail for Mac (Sierra Mail 10.2). If I want to know how many items are in a folder of saved messages in Mail, I can select them all, then click and hold one, then begin to drag.

There has to be a better way to see how many messages exist in a Mail folder. What is it?

I've searched the Communities and Mail Help. Where might I have searched and what might I have searched for that would have revealed the answer?

MacBook Pro, macOS Sierra (10.12.3), Mail 10.2 (Sierra)

Hi Goxlet!

"There has to be a better way to see how many messages exist in a Mail folder..."

There certainly is! Just select any mailbox on the right in Mail´s main window and look to the top of the window, where a consistently updated number of mails in the selected mailbox is shown. Make sure the mailbox sidebar is visible by going to the "View" menu in Mail. In the screenshot (sorry about the German, but everything´s in the same place in English versions of macOS!) you can see I´ve selected a mail folder called "UK" that I created, and at the top it shows me that there are currently 81 mails in the folder. It´s sometimes easy to miss such details in Sierra´s GUI...👿 !! Hope this helps you! Cheers, Ian.

“The issue I have with the number of e-mails specified in parenthesis is that it appears beside the name of the account with nothing that refers to the selected folder. That's quite misleading in my opinion.”

Yes, that certainly could be misleading if that were the case in my setup, but unfortunately I can´t duplicate this issue using Mail 10.2 in Sierra!

I don´t use the tab bar in Mail but that´s just me. But for a second screenshot I activated it, and as you see the number of mails in the selected folder, again the one called “UK”, is displayed both at the top of the window and in the tab bar, with the selected folder´s name to the left, not the account´s name;

Unless I´ve completely misunderstood you this is surely what you want to see?! Mail shouldn´t be showing anything different when you select a mailbox from the right hand sidebar, but if it is perhaps post a screenshot so I can see exactly what you mean!!

I see the name of the folder at the beginning of the line including the parentheses, but because the parentheses follows the account name rather than the folder name, it seems misleading to me. You helped me realize that the information in parentheses describes the contents of the folder rather than the contents of the account, so I marked your answer helpful.
