I am stuck in the OS X Installer screen. I have tried restarting, and shutting down.

I have a 13 inch MBP with Retina screen, and just tried to install an earlier version of my OS. It wouldn't install because I have a newer version on my computer. Now I'm stuck in the OS X Installer screen. I have tried restarting, as well as shutting down and walking away for several minutes, but when I turn it back on, it keeps returning to the Installer screen. It has 8G of memory, and a 500G SSHD. I believe the OS is 10.12.3, but I can't access the information screen to verify.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS Sierra (10.12.1)

Whole going through the OS. Install screen, I come to a prompt that asks me which drive I want to install the OS to. I choose the "Macintosh HD" drive, and I receive the following message: "This operation could not be completed. (com.apple.oinstall error -1.)" At this point, I can go no further, and going back doesn't offer any options that would allow me to quit the OS Install screen.

I hope this might help.

I just tried that, and wasn't able to access the recovery partition. I received the note, "Starting Internet Recovery." I was asked to choose and sign into my router, then was back into the OS Installer. Since that seemed to be a dead end, I restarted from there, and now I seem to be in a loop where the computer tries several times to reboot, then shuts down. It displays the message, "Your computer restarted because of a problem. Press a key or wait a few seconds to continue starting up." I then get the Apple logo, and some progress on the log in bar, and then it displays the message again. Now a new thing, it displayed a circle with a diagonal bar through it. I tried booting into the recovery partition again, and now I'm back into the OS Installer. I thought I would try to recover an earlier version of my system from Time Machine, so I connected my external hard drive and started the computer - - - and it worked as soon as I turned it on!!! The computer booted right into the normal log on screen, and everything seems to be in the correct places and working properly. I'm not sure what we did, but I am back up and running, and extremely happy!!

Thanks to everyone for their help!!
