Mac: authentication of Apple ID fails

my Apple ID cannot be authenticated for iTunes, iCloud, calendar, contacts. (Calendar has the triangle icon with an exclamation mark. Contacts has the circle with the wavy line.)

when i try to sign-in, i get the error message "There was an error connecting to the Apple ID server."

Using another macbook, i was able to sign-in. (same wifi network, same router, same home internet connection.)

using Chrome, i am able to log-in to icloud.com.

from the console, i get the error messages:

akd Authentication with server failed! Error: <private>

akd Server auth response did not contain CK.

akd Server auth response did not contain PRK.

i changed the password of my Apple ID. i still cannot sign-in on my Macbook.

i tried changing the DNS server on my router. i still cannot sign-in.

i am able to sign-in to icloud on my iPhone6/iOS 10.2.1 and iPad Air/iOS 10.2.2 on the same wifi network, router, internet connection.

i do not have any anti-virus or anti-malware apps on my mac.

i tried disabling the firewall of my router. no effect.

i do not have any Certificates on this Macbook.

You've got some adware installed. It could be causing the problem, but regardless, it should be removed. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac will take care of it for you.

https://malwarebytes.com/mac

(Note that I work for Malwarebytes, and this link goes to a page with links that will promote other Malwarebytes products. There's no need to purchase anything to solve this problem.)

If removing that adware doesn't help, check back here.

Feb 2, 2017 2:17 AM in response to thomas_r.

thomas,

i'm embarassed to say that the situation has reverted itself. yesterday when i was able to access the Apple ID server, i was in a coffee shop accessing their wifi.

after yesterday's access to the Apple ID server, last night and today the situation has returned to the same errors.

no access to iTunes downloads. (iTunes tells me that there are updates available, but i cannot download them.)

no access to Calendar.

no access to Contacts.

cannot Sign Out of iCloud (from System Preferences). now when i click Account Details on System Preferences, i get a window to log-in to my Google account. but the field to enter my Google password never appears, just the rolling lines.)

i turned off Firewall on my Mac. the error remains.

i have updated to Sierra 10.12.3. (i'm not sure if this is related, but i was unable to download the update using App Store as the download would always fail. i had to manually download the update file.)

i did a scan using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. it did not find any threats.

below is the latest scan using EtreCheck.

It looks like Malwarebytes hasn't been able to update its signatures, either, as you still have that leftover Spigot file (though it's harmless at this point and isn't the cause of the problem).

Try restarting in safe mode:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455

Be sure to read the information in the section titled "How to tell if your Mac is started in safe mode" on that page, and follow those steps to ensure that you're actually in safe mode. If you aren't, try again.

Once you're in safe mode, check your network connection and see if it's working. If it is, and it fails again when you restart normally, the problem is due to third-party software that you have installed. Which software might be responsible, I'm not sure... I don't see anything obvious.

You do have some old Blackberry software installed... if you don't have a Blackberry anymore, you should uninstall that.

Feb 2, 2017 10:24 PM in response to thomas_r.

prior to trying to reboot in Safe Mode, based on another post in the Apple Developer Forum, turning my wifi off then on allowed me to connect to the iTunes store. i successfully updated my apps. attempts to log-in to calendar, contacts, and icloud still produce the same error. i tried entering a wrong password. the same error ("connecting to Apple ID server").

before rebooting, i uninstalled the Blackberry files based on post of Eric Root.

after rebooting in Safe Mode,

* iTunes Store connected

* Contacts could not connect to iCloud (same error)

* Calendar could not connect (same error. exact message: "Your calendar couldn't be refreshed. Calendar couldn't connect to p40-caldav.icloud.com. make sure you're connected to the internet, and then try again later.")

* could not sign-out of iCloud nor check Account Details using System Preferences (same error).

i also noticed that i can no longer sign-in to my Google account.

If the problem is happening while in safe mode, there's no third-party software involvement.

Try connecting your Mac to another network (such as the wifi at a friend's house or the free wifi at a coffee shop or local library). If the problem goes away while on another network and comes back when you're back at home, then the issue is your network.

Otherwise, it's a problem with your computer's network configuration or your system.

Feb 6, 2017 8:49 AM in response to thomas_r.

i tethered my macbook to my iphone which uses a different carrier from my home DSL line.

i was able to refresh my Contacts, Calendars and if i clicked on "Manage" in the iCloud settings on System Preferences i would get a summary of iCloud storage usage per app.

when i switched back to my home DSL connection, i was not able to refresh Contacts, Calendar, and when i clicked on "Manage" in the iCloud settings of System Preferences i get the error message "You can't manage your storage at this time. Wait a moment and then try again."

Feb 6, 2017 11:38 AM in response to ae58

That's pretty conclusive, then. That's a problem with your network. Most likely, some piece of your network hardware has been hacked. For info on how to troubleshoot that, see:

https://support.malwarebytes.com/customer/portal/articles/2049288-?b_id=9511

(Note that I work for Malwarebytes, and this link goes to the Malwarebytes website, which will have other links that promote Malwarebytes products.)

Feb 6, 2017 12:42 PM in response to thomas_r.

thomas,

just a reminder that the failure of Apple ID authentication on my my home DSL network is only on my macbook.

* i can log-in to the Apple ID server using my wife's Macbook Air

* i can log-in to the Apple ID server using my iPhone

* i can log-in to the Apple ID server using my iPad

the modem/router was provided by the carrier, so i'll have to inquire if i can flash it to factory default.

thank you for your patience.

Feb 8, 2017 4:46 AM in response to ae58

thomas,

sorry i didn't wait for your reply.

while waiting for your reply after i gave my DNS server IP addresses, i decided to try a different set. (btw - these are Norton DNS servers.) i used the Comodo Secure DNS servers. however, i noticed that after i entered the new DNS settings in my router, then checked my Mac's DNS status on System Preferences-Network-DNS, there was no change in the displayed DNS settings. even if i restarted the router and my macbook.

so i entered the DNS IP addresses directly on System Preferences.

this solved the issue.

i am now able to connect to Contacts, Calendar, and the iCloud settings.
