MacBook keeps freezing when I turn it on

Hi,

Yesterday when I turned on my MacBook laptop, it started freezing up with the pinwheel spinning. It kept happening especially every time I clicked a program. I restarted it soon after, and then it was working fine. However, the same thing happened today. Would this have anything to do with me recently updating my system to the latest version of Sierra? Or is this something else entirely. Please help me!

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), macOS Sierra (10.12.3)

Check the startup disk for errors ...

Shut down your Mac.

Wait at least ten seconds then startup while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you can access the built in utilities to verify and repair the disk if necessary then restore OS X using OS X Recovery.

How do I find the start up disk? I'm sorry, I'm completely illiterate when it comes to computers all this stuff is Greek to me. Could you please give a more detailed answer regarding the start up disk part? Also, is there a simpler way to solve this that doesn't involve reinstalling stuff? I don't really use the time machine thing.

Update: I ran First Aid on the Disk Utilities and I guess it didn't find anything. But I'm still really confused about what to do if it happens again.
