Screen Share to Monitor Cheating

Hi

I hope somebody can help me! I got a note from my son's teacher that he was caught cheating on a vocab quiz that he was taking on his school issued iPAD. The school uses the Apple Classroom App and each of the Sixth Graders have an iPAD.

My son is an outstanding student, has an A in the class for this teacher and I do not believe he felt the need to cheat so he gave me an explanation (he is very technical) that he used the flashcard app like everyone else in school to study prior to the quiz. He then closed the app so the only app open is the quiz. While swiping through the quiz, an accidental right to left swipe open the last app that was open on the iPAD. In this case, it was the flashcards and through the SCREEN SHARE, the teacher saw a glimpse of this and took action.

  1. Can somebody let me know if this is plausible? I duplicated it with him so I know the above is true.
  2. Can a teacher tell me if there is a log that shows how long a screen was open in screen view?
  3. Has this happened to anyone else? Seems like it should be more common.

Kids make mistakes and also will attempt to cheat at times, I just want to gather more information prior to meeting with the teacher as my son typically aces vocab quizzes so I am investigating his excuse.

Thanks You!

Hey there,

It sounds like what happened was the multitasking feature called Slide Over. The way this feature works is that you touch one finger down on the bezel just past the right edge of the screen, then you swipe your finger to the left to pull out the slide over sidebar. Usually it will automatically launch the application you use most with Slide Over, or you can swipe up in the slide over sidebar to change the application. Either someone uses that application a lot with Slide Over on that iPad, or he set it. It very well could be an accident, but no way to tell.

As for monitoring and logs to see how long that was use for and at what time, this isn't default with the iPad, but the school's installed profile might be able to, you'd have to ask them.

Good luck!

You would think that the teacher saw him using the app for some time. I'd think a random swap back would yield random information which wouldn't answer the question. You would think that he had to manipulate the second app to get anything meaning full out of it.

You could see how fast your son could go through the procedure.

There is monitoring software a school can use to track ipad using like described. When I was in school, someone had to look over some persons shoulder or pass a note. Times are changing.

It could be the teacher got the wrong ipad. How reliable is the matching of the student to the ipad in question? It could be some type a login to match the student to the ipad.
