MacBook 2016 screen flickering

A few days ago my screen started to flicker. It looks like it rapidly turns on and off. It happens now and then and seems to end if one moves the mouse cursor to the top of the screen. I think it started after upgrading to macOs Sierra 10.12.3. Anyone else has this problem?

MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2016), macOS Sierra (10.12.3)

I have been having this same issue where my screen will start to flicker in a certain area it looks like a bunch of white bars at first I thought it was part of the video then I refreshed the page and they were no longer there. I had the 2017 MacBook Pro non touchbar this is the second unit I have had this problem with not identical but similar. User uploaded fileI am patiently waiting for apple to release a new version of the MacBook Pro as I do not trust the current version after having heard of this issue so many times and experienced it on 2 of my own

Please fix apple In need of a reliable machine!

MadMaxy,

In reply to your other question Time machine encryption and sleep- a mouse "jiggler" will solve that problem. Here is one that works and has solved the problem for me for both TM and external FileVault encryption ceasing due to inactivity:

Why Apple locks topics that are still relevant and prevents users from sending messages directly to another user, I don't know. Seems to reduce the helpfulness of these forums.

I have the Intel HD Graphics 515 1536 MB on my MacBook 2016 12-inch.

Yes, it seems that it goes away when moving the mouse, but sometimes the flickering frequencey just increases. Usually I have to move the mouse to the top of the screen to make it stop.

The gpu switching option is not available on my MacBook unfortunately.

I hope it is related to the macOs upgrade to 10.12.3. I read the release notes:

  • Improves automatic graphics switching on MacBook Pro (15-inch, October 2016).
  • Resolves graphics issues while encoding Adobe Premiere Pro projects on MacBook Pro with Touch Bar (13- and 15-inch, October 2016).

It seems they have updated something in this area. Since you only experience the problem when running your Intel graphics card and my graphics card is also an Intel I suspect they introduce a bug in the Intel graphics card driver when making the updates.

Hi

I faced the similar issue for past 2 weeks and when it became too much annoying, I tried my best to find a resolution for the same. I have Macbook Pro Retina, 13 Inch and the problem got resolved with the following command:

  • Shut down your Macbook
  • Press Command + Option + P + R keys, while pressing these, press power button
  • for 3-5 seconds hold on the keys and you will hear a chime and it will reboot without showing anything (just a grey screen)
  • Release the keys and let it reboot automatically
  • Voila! this solution worked for me

Let me know if that worked for you.

There are some fix available try this..

Method 1: Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac

NVRAM is short term of Nonvolatile Random-Access Memory. It is a short memory for quick access to certain settings. Systems that can be stored in NVRAM include sound volume, display resolution, boot-disk selection, time zone and recent kernel frighten information.

Steps to to reset NVRAM:

  • Press Option, Command, P, and R Keys all together.
  • Release after 20 seconds.
  • Meanwhile that time Mac can restart.
Note: If your Mac uses a firmware password, this key combination will not mix or boot your Mac from MacOS retrieval. To restore NVRAM, first turn off the firmware password.

Method 2: Reset SMC

SMC is short term of System Management Controller. We have to reset and try because it is responsible for other low-level functions of Intel based Mac book.Steps to reset the SMC:For Non Removable Battery

  • Go to Apple menu and Shut Down it.
  • When shuts down process completes then press on the left side of the built-in keyboard, Shift-Control-Option, the power button all together.
  • Release after 10 seconds.
  • Now press the power button to re-run your Mac.

I also have the problem, it started either yesterday or today. With testing I could find out a few characteristics of this issue.

I own a 2016 MBP 15 inch (2.7GHz i7, Radeon Pro 460). The Problem only occurs when the macbook is running the Intel HD 530, ONLY if I am viewing a still screen. Even the tiniest animation in a webbrowser and it will not appear at all. Moving the mouse will also immediately fix it (until you stop again and wait a few seconds).

Since I worked on my LG UltraFine 4k recently I am not certain when it started since with the 4k Display the MBP is always running the AMD GPU. I can certainly say it started BEFORE updating to 10.12.3!

Workaround for the time beeing: In Energy saving options, disable GPU switching. This will higher the power consumption though.

If I try to search for the issue I find more hackintosch related posts - these Guys had the Issue with the same graphic card for at least one year as it looks like, and its always a problem with the driver. Makes me hope it is as well, but I will see a genius bar next week if I dont find a solution...
