To remove "Avast" use its uninstaller program, which will remove it completely. Use no other technique, utility, or procedure. Among typically worthless "anti-virus" junk Avast stands out as rather unique in that its uninstaller actually works with 100% effectiveness. It's the only thing it does well.

Perhaps you did not use its uninstaller program, or perhaps it just didn't work. In that case, download "Avast" again but do not install it. Its uninstallation program will be included in that same downloaded disk image. That's what you need to use.

"CleanMyMac" is another story altogether. Excerpted from Effective defenses against malware and other threats:

Never install any product that claims to "clean up", "speed up", "optimize", "boost" or "accelerate" your Mac; to "wash" it, "tune" it, or to make it "shiny". Those claims are absurd.

  • Such products are very aggressively marketed. They are all scams.
  • They generally operate on the flawed premise that a Mac accumulates "junk" that needs to be routinely "cleaned out" for optimum performance.
  • Trial versions of those programs are successful because they provide the instant gratification of greater free disk space.
  • That increased space is the result of irreversible destruction of files, programs, or operating system components normally protected from inadvertent alteration or deletion. The eventual result will be unreliable operation, poor performance and random crashes that may not become evident for months or even years after their use, when updates to programs or OS X are eventually released.
  • Memory "cleaners" that circumvent OS X's memory management algorithms work by purging inactive memory contents to mass storage, which can only result in degraded performance and accelerated hardware failure.

Merely uninstalling such ill-conceived "cleaning" apps, even when performed in strict accordance with their instructions (which often don't work) is usually an insufficient remedy. Very briefly stated, the recovery procedure from having used such things is as follows, and in the following order:

  1. Back up the Mac using Time Machine or an equivalent backup strategy
  2. Remove the scam "cleaning" products according to their instructions, and evaluate
  3. Reinstall macOS using macOS Recovery, and evaluate
  4. Reinstall all other potentially affected apps, and evaluate
  5. Erase the Mac completely, followed by reinstalling macOS, followed by reinstalling essential apps from their original sources, followed by migrating User content from the Time Machine backup.

Since the results of Steps 2-4 are almost always unsatisfactory, I omit them as unnecessarily time-consuming. An expanded procedure for Step 5 is provided below the horizontal line.

I've also searched my computer for any files names 'Avast' or 'CleanMyMac' but nothing has turned up.

Those files are in locations that Spotlight can't search.

Download and run Find Any File to search for any files with the application's name and the developer's name in the file name. For example for CleanMyMac you'd do two searches:

1 - Name contains cleanmymac

2 - Name contains macpaw

or for Avast

1 - Name contains avast.

Any files that are found can be dragged from the search results window to the Desktop for deletion.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.

You still have Avast files on your hard drive. Follow the developer's instructions on how to uninstall Avast:

Uninstalling Avast Mac Security

How to Remove (Uninstall) Avast! From a Mac - YouTube

You've also got a very bad piece of software which many consider malware installed. It's CleanMyMac2.

How To Uninstall CleanMyMac 2? Complete Removal of Mac Apps

After removing them rerun Etrecheck to make sure there are no move files from either app still on your hard drive. Reboot and check the performance.

Feb 1, 2017 11:06 PM in response to Old Toad

Ive already uninstalled Avast from inside the app, deselected all scanners, and rebooted. still seems to be searching for launchers in EtreCheck. As for CleanMyMac 2, I had uninstalled that way back in 2013, not sure why it would still be in my system. I've also searched my computer for any files names 'Avast' or 'CleanMyMac' but nothing has turned up. Not sure what to do from here. I can't find anything to be removed...

Feb 2, 2017 4:15 AM in response to acmacfabe

In regard to uninstalling: for some programs all that is required is to drag the application to the trash. Other programs (such as Avast) install more than just a program in the Applications folder and these programs cannot be uninstalled by dragging the application to the trash. You must use an uninstaller program that should delete all references everywhere. Finally there are some very badly designed programs (intentionally?) that have an uninstaller that doesn't do the full job or that should have an uninstaller but do not.
