AirPods caller can't hear me

When changing AirPods between devices or when picking up Airpods to answer a call sometimes the other party can't hear me.

There seams to be an issue with transmitting microphone input in AirPods to the iPhone.

As it happens to often I basically have to keep the AirPods in my ear and not change to other devices.

So if it works it keeps working, as long as I keep AirPods in my ear. So it seams to be a Bluetooth setup connection issue with AirPods microphone.

iPhone SE, iOS 10.2.1, AirPods 3.5.1

I also have this issue, the microphone in each airpod has completely stopped working. I can only use them to listen to music now. I contacted support and they have instructed me that I need to sent them in for repair which is a bummer. The microphones did work for about 2 months
