Self assigned IP when connecting to ethernet through Thunderbolt adapter

Hi! I just got a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter for my Macbook Air, but when I connected it to an Ethernet cable, the following message showed on System Preferences > Net > Ethernet Thunderbolt: "Ethernet Thunderbolt has a self assigned IP and will not be able to connect to the Internet."

(I'm sorry if there are mistakes, the actual message is in Spanish)

Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Thank you!

This usually means that the mac is not picking up a valid IP from the DHCP server.

Are you connecting this to a home router, switch, cable modem, what...?

Make sure that this device is configured properly as a DHCP server, for wired clients.

Check System Preferences/Network/Ethernet/Advanced/TCP/IP and make sure it is set to Configure IPv4 Using DHCP.

Thank you Luis Sequeira1, I was told that people from here (work) should check if proxy is correctly configured, I'm waiting for them to come.
