CarPlay starts playing through phone after being paused

I just got a 2017 Audi A3 with CarPlay. I have an iPhone 6s on the latest 10.2.1 software.

I can connect to CarPlay no problem and everything works fine.

But if I am playing music, overcast or iHeartradio and I mute or pause through the Audi Mmi controller ( steering wheel or volume knob). The music pauses properly. And it shows it paused in CarPlay.

However if I press it to play again, it starts playing through my phone and not the car stereo. CarPlay is still connected and I can play and pause through the car controls but will only play through the phone.

If I disconnect the phone from the USB and reconnect it will start playing properly through the car stereo until I try and pause again.

Can't figure this out.
