nike watch on treadmill?

I have an old gen 1 apple watch. When I would run on a treadmill or elliptical, with my iphone on the stand, it would not pick up run information (steps, etc) and I guess this is a known thing.

My question is: has this been addressed on the new Nike apple watch? I don't want to drop the money for the new watch if I'd just have to run with the phone on my arm still anyways...

Nike advises:

"Note: If you use the Nike+ Run Club app for Apple Watch in Indoor Mode, pace and distance are calculated using accelerometer data from your mobile device's built-in accelerometer rather than GPS data. To ensure your motion is captured, carry your mobile device in your hand.

If you carry your device in a pocket or armband, your motion may not be fully captured.

If you place your device in the treadmill tray or cupholder, your motion will not be captured."

You may therefore prefer to use the watch's built-in Workout app (which is also included on Apple Watch Nike+) for tracking indoor treadmill workouts.

If you are experiencing issues with workout tracking, the following steps may help:

If you have not yet done so, update your iPhone and Apple Watch to the latest software, starting with your iPhone:

On your iPhone, go to: Settings > Privacy > Motion & Fitness - check that both Fitness Tracking and Health are enabled.

On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Privacy > Motion & Fitness - check that both Fitness Tracking and Heart Rate are enabled.

Close certain apps and restart both your iPhone and your watch:

Unpair and re-pair your watch:

I suggest that you consult Nike's support resources and/or contact Nike for assistance with questions relating to their Nike+ Run Club app:

Hi

There has never been a known issue with Apple Watch tracking treadmill or elliptical workouts and it is not necessary to carry your iPhone or have it with you.

Be sure to record your workouts via the Workout app, choosing the activity type that most closely matches your workout. This enables Apple Watch to use the most appropriate sensors and data sources when estimating the results, including using tailored calorie calculations for preset activity types.

During general daily wear and when using the Workout app to record workouts when GPS data is either not relevant or not available - including Indoor Run and Indoor Walk workouts on a treadmill and Elliptical workouts - the Activity app and Workout app track your arm motion (measured by the accelerometer) when estimating results including steps, calories and progress towards the Exercise goal.

For the best results, allow the arm on which you are wearing your watch to swing naturally when walking or running and to move naturally as expected for other workout types (where relevant to the activity type).

Calibrating your watch can improve the accuracy of estimations made by Activity app and Workout app. Calibration teaches your watch how your arm movements relate to your stride lengths at different speeds when you are walking and/or running. It does this - during outdoor walks and/or outdoor runs - by comparing data from the accelerometer with GPS / Location Services data.

More information and instructions for calibrating your watch are available via the link below. The article also includes instructions for resetting existing calibration data and starting afresh. Resetting your calibration data will not erase your Activity history.

For the best performance from the heart rate sensor (data from which is used when estimating calories) during workouts, be sure to wear your watch snugly on the top of your wrist. Apple suggests that you consider tightening the band before starting a workout and loosening it again afterwards:

ok I get it, and maybe it's my fault because I didn't specify; but I am specifically talking about the Nike+ Run Club app on the iPhone and watch. The app puts a popup right on the screen the first time you put it on "indoor/treadmill," that reminds you to hold the phone.

So, since this is the Nike+ Run Club app, and there's now a Nike apple watch, that is what I am asking--if the Nike apple watch makes it so you don't have to have the phone on your person when you run indoors.
