The iPad 2, 3 and 1st generation iPad Mini are all ineligible and excluded from upgrading to iOS 10.

The farthest these devices can be updated to is iOS 9.3.5.

They all share similar hardware architectures and a less powerful 1.0 Ghz CPU that Apple has deemed insufficiently powerful enough to even run the basic, barebones features of iOS 10.

Why would you want to upgrade, anyways?

Since iOS 8, older iPad models such as the iPad 2, 3 and 4 and the 1st gen iPad Mini have only been getting the most basic of iOS features.

Older iPad users get none of the newest and coolest cutting edge features that newer model iDevices, with better hardware specs, can handle with more aplomb.

Plus, these are the only two supported models left that use the much outdated 30 pin dock connector.

The same iPad 2 users who whined and moaned and groaned that both iOS 8 and 9 slowed down the performance of their iPad 2 models would come back, once again, in angry droves, with even more complaints of slowdowns under iOS 10.

Plus, the myriad of release of iOS 10, at the moment, seems riddled with bugs and undocumented feature omissions that current iOS upgraders are, currently, struggling with.

FYI,

Just because your iPad 2i is no longer able to upgrade to the latest iOS doesn't mean your Pad 2i is suddenly useless.

Your iPad 2will work as it always has and the apps you have installed on it will continue to update and receive some level of app updates relevent to your current iOS.

You have had four years of iOS upgrades and updates.

Your iPad 2 will still do everything it does now and you will, get, at least, another full year, perhaps two, if you decide you want to wait longer to get a new or newer iPad model.

Your iPad 2 is NOT, suddenly, becoming obsolete or useless.

Good Luck to you!

Unfortunately, yes... The iPad 2 is no longer supported by Apple.

The iPad 2 is stuck at version 9.3.5, and won't get any more major updates.

Apple dropped support for the A5 and A5X chips with iOS 10, therefore dropping support with the iPad 2.

Don't worry! At least you can still install a lot of 32-bit apps! (Because iOS 11 happened and killed 32-bit.)

...however, there is a drawback.

Have you ever heard... of the BroadPwn?

Yes, my friend, there's malware out near the iPhones, and BroadPwn is affecting devices left and right, iPad 2 included. And no, Apple isn't patching it.

At this time, it is very dangerous to use an iPad 2.

Hope this helps! Have a good day ^^

I am calling B.S. on your malware scare post.

If this is out there and rampantly affecting all iDevices, ALL of the Mac related websites would be reporting this.

I have seen nothing about this.

Nothing from MacDailyNews, Mac Life, iPhone Life, MacWorld, 9to5 Mac, Ars Technical, nothing.

Where's your info/assumption/proof coming from?

Article link please.

I smell Troll post.

An iPad 2 is shortly nearing the 7 year old mark and is hopelessly underpowered for being able to run Apple’s recent iOSes.

The iPad 2 hasn't been getting much in iOS features since iOS 7!

A lot of the new and cool features under iOS 8 and 9 were lost/not made available for the iPad 2, 3 and 1st gen Mini models!

Apple, like most computing companies, are not going to support their older mobile device hardware forever.

You have been using your iPad 2 on iOS 9.3.5 for over a year, now.

Your iPad 2 is still receiving app updates, currently, but look for this to change over time.

iPad 2, 3 and 1st generation iPad Mini users should expect to get one more full year's use out of these devices before an inevitable decision will have to be made to upgrade to a new or newer iPad.

IPad 4 users may, or may not, get another additional year as the iPad 4 got to get one more iOS upgrade to IOS 10, before Apple stopped supporting/retired the iPad 4, too!

By the time you need to make this decision, your iPad 2 WILL be nearly 8 years old and will, probably, be 3 iOS generations behind!

It’s the way it is!

Technology marches on!

I will have to purchase a new iPad for my wife sometime in 2018 or early 2019!

iPads are no longer as expensive as they used to be when you purchased that iPad 2.

Plus, the storage sizes are larger and newer iPads can, finally, do some limited multitasking!

The new 2017 iPad 5, which is very similar in size and weight to an iPad 2 or 3, is $329 U.S.D. for a 32 GBs version.

A 128 GBs 2017 iPad 5 is $429 U.S.D.

A 128 GBs iPad Mini 4 is $399 U.S.D. $30 cheaper for the identical storage size in a larger screen iPad 5!

Your iPad 2 sold for more than this fof lesser storage!

For comparison a 16 GBs iPad 2 sold new for $499 U.S.D.! $70 to $100 more than the 128GBs iPad 5/Min 4 which is much more powerful than an iPad 2 and has 8 times the storage capacity of the baseline iPad 2.

A 32 GBs iPad 2 sold new for $599 U.S.D.! That’s $270 dollars more for the same storage size of the new, 2017 iPad 5!

The 64 GBs iPad 2 sold new for $699 U.S.D.!

FYI,

That iPhone 6S you purchased wasn’t cheap, either, but you chose to purchase it over an iPad.

An iPhone, to you, was a better perceived value.

I am the exact opposite.

I think iPhones are way over priced and becoming more of status symbol device now with the iPhone 8 and X.

I’d rather pay more for a iPad than an iPhone.

That is my perceived value!

An iPhone is an expensive smartphone!!!

I purchase cheap Android phones just for calls (I never go online with my Android phones to do anything other than OS uodates).

I will gladly spend more for a new iPad over an iPhone, any day of the week!

I feel with an iPad, I get more for my very hard earned cash!

I don’t feel that way about iPhones!

Perceived value.

Technology has always followed the mantra “better, faster, cheaper”!

At this point in time, any new or much newer iPads will be much faster and more powerful than any 5,6, 7 year computing device!

Good Luck to You!

7-8 years is more than just a “few” years!

Are you still using a 10 years old or more desktop/laptop computer?

Like I stated, you went and purchased a new iPhone 6S two years, ago.

Two years, ago, I purchased a 12.9 inch screen iPad Pro.

I expect to get, at least, 6 years (hoping for 8-10 years) out of my iPad Pro.

My wife is still using a 64 GBs iPad 3 and I still use my 64 GBs iPad 2, also.

I, even have an the original iPad 1 that still gets used from time to time, too!

That iPad will be 8 years old very soon and is still alive and kickin’!
