I want to delete numerous photos from iPhoto and the only way I know how to do it is one photo at a time. Is there a way to mark many photos at the same time and delete them in batches?

To delete more than one photo at a time in iPhoto on the Mac, select several photos at once and ctrl-click the selection and then click the Trash icon.
To select all photos at once use the key combination ⌘A, to select a range of photos click the first, then hold down the shift key and click the last photo.

Another way of stating it is do it the same way you'd select multiple files in the Finder.
