Why do I have to convert songs to AAC I purchased on iTunes?

Why in the world do almost any songs purchased from iTunes direct to my Mac, have to be converted to an AAC version to get them to transfer to my iPod?? If I purchase a song from iTunes to my Apple products, why do I need to take these extra steps for almost every song purchase and download?

I have a MacBook Pro (1 year old), and an Ipod4 (2 yrs old). All iOS, versions, etc are up to date.

iPod touch (4th generation)

Greyed out songs is an issue I see also.

Not a lot of songs but a pain.

And you are not converting songs to AAC because they are already AAC.

It seems to be that the songs info is transferred to the database on the iPhone, but the actual song file is not transferred to the iPhone.

The way I fix it is...

  1. In iTunes, select the iPhone.
  2. Click the Summary tab in the left sidebar.
  3. Scroll down and check Manually manage music and videos.
  4. Now click Apply.
  5. Click the Music tab in the left side bar and you can scroll through the Music on the iPhone and delete the grayed out songs.
  6. After you have deleted all of the songs that are grayed out, click the Summary tab and uncheck, manually manage music and videos.
  7. Sync the iPhone

An iPod will only play purchased iTunes music and only support those files.

Completely untrue.

iPods Will play these formats;

  • AAC (M4A, M4B, M4P, up to 320 Kbps)
  • Apple Lossless (a high-quality compressed format)
  • MP3 (up to 320 Kbps)
  • MP3 Variable Bit Rate (VBR)
  • WAV.
  • AA (audible.com spoken word, formats 2, 3, and 4)
  • AIFF.

When it comes to CDs on your iPod, they have to go thru iTunes to convert the file to work on it.

An audio CD needs to be converted to one of the formats above. iTunes is obviously the most convenient to use since you're adding the songs to iTunes, but you can use any software to convert

When I purchase a song from the iTunes store, which then gets downloaded to my MacPro, I then transfer the song to a playlist on my iPod via iTunes. Once I sync my iPod, the song appears as "greyed out" on my iPod, and will not play in the playlist. I then have to go back to my Mac/iTunes, convert the song to AAC format, transfer that version to my iPod, and only then will the song appear/play on my iPod. This only happens with songs I purchase from iTunes.
