iCloud Drive not uploading and downloading

My iMac and MBP are both running MacOS 10.12.3. I store all my files on iCloud Drive, from where they synch with my iMac (used to access the files routinely), MBP (used to access the files routinely) and iPhone (used to access the files infrequently). Until yesterday, any file (mostly Word, Excel and PDF format) copied to, deleted from or modified in the iCloud Drive folders on any of these devices has reliably synched via the iCloud. Yesterday this has stopped and all I get is a window that looks like this:

User uploaded file

The symptoms are:

  • Existing files in the iCloud Drive folder in Finder do not synch to iCloud Drive after changes are saved to them.
  • New files copied to the iCloud Drive folder in Finder do not upload to iCloud Drive.
  • When I delete a file in the iCloud Drive folder in Finder, iCloud Drive will recognise this and delete the file.
  • I can upload files to the iCloud Drive via the Safari interface. Finder will recognise this and attempt to download the files, but never complete the operation.
  • These symptoms are valid for all two desktop devices. I can access files stored on the iCloud Drive via the iPhone.

If your iCloud storage is full

If you can’t move or save a document to iCloud Drive, your iCloud storage space may be full. The document stays on your Mac, and is uploaded to iCloud Drive when space becomes available.

iCloud Drive shares your iCloud storage with iCloud Photo Library, iOS device backups, messages and attachments in iCloud Mail (your @icloud.com email account), and more.

To get more space, you can upgrade your storage. You can also remove items you don’t need to store in iCloud Drive. For more information, see Manage iCloud storage.

What if my files don't update to iCloud?

Check these things first:

If you tried these steps and your files still don’t upload to iCloud:

  1. Stay signed in to iCloud.
  2. Save your updated files to a different folder on your Mac or PC.
  3. Contact Apple Support.

Didn't help. I have removed the documents, renamed them and tried to move them back to iCloud Drive - upload stalled after a few KB. Created a new Word document, saved it to the iCloud Drive folder on the iMac - upload stalled after a few KB:

User uploaded file

BTW, rebooting the computer earlier didn't help either. I think this may have something to do with the MacOS update 10.12.3 a few days ago.

Just added copied a Jpeg image to the iCloud Drive folder on the iMac - same result, upload stalled.

I have just tried iCloud on my better half's MBA (OSX 10.11.6, 11" late 2010) on the same WiFi - it works just fine.

I might be wrong but it seems as though you might have tried the jpg whilst the word document is still trying to upload. To test another document properly, you need to remove all the documents that are stuck uploading so that the progress circle to the right of the iCloud Drive in your finder disappears and then try.
