Apple TV airplay, audio but no video

I was using airplay to mirror my Macbook Pro screen on my Apple TV and watch a video in Chrome, but it stopped working. The audio is still coming through but there's no picture, the TV is just a black screen.

All I did was turn off my TV and leave for a bit and then come back, I don't know how I could have changed any settings or anything.

I am having the exact same issue. Worked just fine a couple nights ago. Tried to use airplay to watch a show, the first part that is an advertisement works just fine and then when the show comes on all I get is audio and no video. It also shows a website in the bottom left corner.

Up until yesterday, I have been using safari on my iPad Pro to AirPlay movies. I used Airplay, from the second page of the control panel, not AirPlay Mirroring from the first page. Audio and Video were rendered perfect;y.

From yesterday, the video doesn't show on the TV, only on the iPad. However the audio streams to the Apple TV 4 perfectly.

I have tried rebooting everything. I'm suspecting an IOS or TVOS update has caused this, as it changed from one evening to the next with no settings changes done by me at all.

it sounds very similar to the OP. I think it may be linked, and if so, it is likely to be TVOS that is causing this.

Edit: AirPlay mirroring (page 1 of control panel on ipad) still works, even though AirPlay (page 2) is broken. The problem with mirroring is that the video is not full screen. It has a wide black border, and the resolution is not nearly as good as it was when I was using Airplay.

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.

  1. Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
  2. Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
  3. Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
  4. Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
  5. Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
  6. Restart your mobile device or computer.

If you are still having problems, try using 802.11n for wifi if you are currently using either 802.11b or 802.11g.

If your problem is AirPlaying from a computer, try disabling bluetooth
