only phone numbers show up in messaging for some people

For about 2-3 days now in messaging, for some messages the phone number only shows up--no name. The person's initials still show in the bubble. It is some iPhone uses, some not. When in the message, and I click on the phone number to go to the contact, there is no option at the top to see a name, it is a blank space. There are 4 pictures (message, call, video, and mail) and then "Notes." If I click edit, I can add a phone, email, etc. But there is nothing at the top. I have tried to edit one & add an email, but that did not fix the problem.

I have done a hard restart several times. I have updated to 10.2.1. I have tried turning off iMessage and turning back on. I have tried turning off MMS messaging & turning back on as well.

Any other ideas?

iPhone 7, iOS 10.2.1

Hello kparker2003,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you are unable to see contact's name in Messages, only their phone number. It sounds like you have tried some good troubleshooting steps already, so your next step is to open the Contacts app and find one of the contacts you're having this issue with. Tap Edit, then delete and re-add their phone number. Once that is re-entered, tap Done and check the Messages app to see if your issue is resolved.

Let us know the results of this test. We'll help you get through this. Cheers!
