Connect 1st gen iPod to iTunes.

I bought a used 1st generation iPod 8GB on eBay. It tells me to connect to iTunes; but when I do, the iPod appears on iTunes then quickly disappears. After that I get, “There was a temporary problem completing your request. An unknown error occurred (590624) Try again later.” What can I do? I tried reinstalling iTunes 12.5.3, using iTunes 10.3, restored iPod, restarted PC, rebooted iTunes, and got very frustrated. Any other ideas or solutions would be deeply appreciated?

Thanks for your response. I realize that I did not mention that it is an iPod Touch. I did try recovery mode. The only option offered was restore. I have done that twice and still the same thing. ITunes recognized that it was connected; but before I can do anything, it disappears and I get the same error message.
