Why won't my iPod 2nd generation charge?

So I plug in my iPod 2g and it shows me the no-battery icon:

It stays that way for around five seconds then goes blank for a second, then switches to this screen:

It stays on that screen for maybe 30 seconds then goes blank again, then switches back to no battery icon. It is a cycle and I have left it charging for over eight hours and nothing happened. Does anyone know a solution? I have scoured the Internet and found no one with the same problem.

Hey it kind of worked! So i plugged it in and held the power and the home buttons and it went into recovery mode. So then I plugged it into my computer and opened iTunes and clicked on restore iPod. It went to the Apple logo with a loading bar under it. When it was done it just went back into recovery mode. Whenever I try to restore it again

It gives me an error saying that my request couldn't be carried out. What do I do?
