Hi it doesn't seem to want to do anything so I will have to contact my nearest Apple Store in Manchester and see if they can help. My problem is that we cannot buy a new one any more as we have done in the past and this is perfect for my son who is 33 and who has learning difficulties, autism and is visually impaired and cannot be trusted with an internet one as he could go on inappropriate sites and be totally unaware that he was on them or buy loads of things that he cannot afford!!! Thank you for trying to help.

Just to add... the dreaded "red cross" is usually (but not always) associated with a hard drive failure. If it's not feasible to buy a new iPod (or an expensive repair), buying used is an option via Amazon or eBay. Also, though a long shot, garage and/or estate sales might provide opportunity. If neither of those options pan out, I'm guessing with the trade-ins that Apple Stores accept, there have to be some reconditioned units for sale somehow. somewhere; certainly, it's worth asking an Apple Store about.

Thank you for your advice, it is much appreciated. I think we will have to visit our local Apple Store in Manchester to see if they can fix it but some of the ones on eBay that claim to be brand new are well over £500 which seems a silly price to me. We did buy the one he has now (costing £300) this way to replace the original one. We did buy an iPod nano yesterday but of course it does not have the massive storage the classic had. Once again thank you for your advice.
