My MacBook Pro touch pad stopped working?

I recently update my OS to Sierra. and charged the battery.

The pad itself won't move...no click.

Can they be related?

The pad was a little weak before the update, but did work.

Suggestions?

MacBook Pro, macOS Sierra (10.12.1)

You don't say which Mac this is, but there is a known problem with a battery swelling and exerting pressure on the trackpad from below and keeping it from working. If you have a removable battery, remove it and see if it is swelling. If it is not a user removable battery, then it should be opened up and checked by Apple or an AASP.

Don't delay--a swelling battery can damage your Mac.

Good luck!

If it's one of the batteries you can remove yourself, then it will be obvious if it's swelling because it will be splitting apart. Also, you can try the trackpad with the battery removed to see if there is a difference in how it works.

This is not so easy to determine with batteries you are not supposed to remove yourself.

One thing you can check--hold down the option key and click on the battery icon. If it says anything other than "Normal" in the drop down menu like "Check Battery" or "Service Battery", it is definitely time for a new one.

Also, if you have access to an Apple Store, they can run a stress test on your battery at the Genius Bar and evaluate your trackpad at the same time for free.

Good luck!

You can certainly do this yourself--the biggest issue will be the tri-wing fasteners that hold it in. I don't know which size mid 2010 you have, but here are instructions for the 15":

The ifixit site also has instructions for the 13" and 17".

If you can get it working without spending very much on it, it is certainly worth fixing, if only to use as a desktop or a spare. Old as it is, it will still run Sierra.

Good luck!
