iPhone 7 wont unlock with correct passcode!!

iPhone 7 Plus / iOs 10.2

I have used the same unlock passcode since I set this phone up four months ago. It worked fine last night before bed. I did NOT change my passcode. This morning, the phone did not recognize my finger print or passcode. I tried multiple times entering what is the correct passcode. I restarted the device and same thing. I had a family member call me and the phone would work but only their number was in the caller ID, not their name as stored in contacts. Same result with text messages. Got a few, but only with number from and not contact info.

It appeared that the device corrupted and "forgot" my information, but the carrier information was ok for phone calls and text messages.

I logged into iCloud and using "Find My iPhone" erased the device to restore it from iCloud back-up (as Apple suggests when you forget your passcode). This went pretty smoothly through the initial process and two-factor authentication but then a screen popped up that states ...."Enter Old Passcode, some of your data stored in iCloud is protected by the passcode previously used to unlock this iPhone. Your Passcode is encrypted and cannot be read by Apple" ........ At this point the old 6-digit unlock passcode must be entered. I initially thought that would work, because I did not change it and it appeared the device had "forgot" its associated account. However, again entering the only passcode I have ever used with this device did not work. I can skip it and proceed but it advised that protected data in iCloud will not be restored.

What is the problem here? How Did the device change my passcode and is there any other way to retrieve this data? (I do not sync/backup to iTunes, only iCloud). Also, is this an indication of a defect in the device hardware? I don't want to go through this hassle again.

Thank You for any helpful information.

I have an iPhone 6 and mine just did the exact same thing a few hours ago. For absolutely no reason, it prompted for the passcode instead of the thumb print and then wouldn't accept the 6-digit passcode that I've used FOREVER. Now it's locked. And no.... there's no one else who has access to it.

What an absolute piece of crap for it to do that randomly.

Hello WTHJustHappened,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Community. I understand you’ve been unable to restore your iPhone to factory settings via iCloud because of Two Factor Authentication, and I have some information that may help. Have look at the article below.

I'm having the exact same problem. I set a new passcode to my iPhone 7, put the 2nd verification of the same passcode, but when I locked it, and tried to enter again, the passcode was incorrect. I can receive phone calls and text messages, but with no ID recognition. Now my iPhone is disabled, but still can receive phone calls. I have a lot of data on my phone and don´t want to lose it if I restore it.

I had this happen to me to weeks in a row. It has happened the last two Mondays. Works fine all week, wake up Monday morning and the phone won't except my pass code. Last Monday, it finally excepted the code after the 14th try. So far I made it to being locked out an hour. This is what make you hate these phones, when there a known issue and they do nothing to correct it.

I'm experiencing a similar problem. I use a company-given iPhone 6, and after upgrading to 10.3 it wants me enter Old Passcode to recover some info from iCloud. I jave been using an 8-digit passcode as that is enforced by some policies running on it. Before reaching that section where that 6-digit passcode is requested I was asked for and correctly entered my Apple ID and password, and my 8-digit passcode

Thoughts?

Did you ever get this resolved? It's happening to me right now. I got locked out of my iPhone 6 and took it to the Apple store today. The Apple Tech erase my phone and told me to go home and restore my phone with iTunes or iCloud. Got home tried both ways and I can't restore it without the old password (see message below). Help. I don't want to lose my data.

"Enter Old Passcode, some of your data stored in iCloud is protected by the passcode previously used to unlock this iPhone. Your Passcode is encrypted and cannot be read by Apple"

This just happened to my wife. Someone at work said use 123456 and it worked!

She had just about smashed her phone when this miracle worked. Her password is nothing like that "fix" number.

When I went into settings to turn off the password requirement I had to use a different icloud password to get into that feature....???? then I had to use the "123456" ***???

So try this for your mystery "my password doesn't work anymore" problem

My iPhone 7plus will not recognize my passcode after charging it when it died. I have ALWAYS had a 4 digit passcode and now it’s asking for a 6 digit one. I am the ONLY one that has access to my phone and my 4 digit passcode was working just 10 min prior. As my phone is sitting here locked I’m getting text messages and now it’s not showing the contact name on the text, just their number. Looks like from reading on here SEVERAL are having the same issue. Some from over a year ago. How can this STILL be happing and how do I fix this???

This has happened to me when with an iPad I just purchased brand new from T-Mobile. The same passcode I’ve had forever that I use on my iPhone as well just won’t work!! I’ve never changed my passcode lock and I’m certain that no one else could have ever got on my iPad to change it either. I’m at a loss what to do about it? I never plug into a pc either. I solely rely on my iCloud account to back up and without plugging it in to iTunes it’s looking like that’s my only option? I’ve literally used the iPad twice since buying it in December. I’m so frustrated about that if it was not to late to return it I would have! I’m out of ideas.
