The reason they don't convert to emoji is because they're missing the dash. If you want to type and have them convert, you would need to type :-), ;-) and so forth. I often type what you showed in your post just to avoid things converting to ridiculous cartoons.
I clicked solved by mistake... 😉 Here on this forum (Not sure we can still call it a forum with the new interface) typing ";)" is automatically transformed in 😉 .... Good! But it is not like that on in my message app so young audience with don't event know ";)" means 😉 tell me I have problems with my emoji...
Is there a way to have ";)" I mean 😉 without to waste the time to click, then scroll, then chose the right emoji (emoticon, I mean)

This is great! Thank you cavemees!
So now you have to be a power user to use a Mac... 😉
OT: About the new UI here (new from 2014... but I can't get use to it) I found this on another site
Quite honestly I thought Apple's Discussions were significantly more useful quite a while ago when you could simply browse through the ongoing discussions in the various categories. You could see who was posting and you could either answer a question, tag along with a relevant question in an ongoing discussion, or start a new thread. There was a real sense of belonging and you could almost get to know the major contributors to the discussions. I find the forums somewhat less useful and helpful in the newer versions.
What people used to it think now?
Why not use Message's emoji?
